So this is why everyone hates car dealerships...

Here goes my rant:

So back in February I bought my 2008 Suburban LT1 from this Chrysler dealership about an hour and a half away from where I live. Reason why I bought it from them is because I got it about $6,000 cheaper than anywhere else that had similar trim/mileage. Day after I bought it I get pulled over and given a verbal warning because my rear tail-light was out. Easy and cheap fix so I did it myself. Then as time went on I found the brakes that they "just" replaced were in need of being changed as they were tearing into the rotors. So that's not a cheap fix.

Now today. I go out because the truck is telling me I'm in need of an oil change. This is my first time doing it on this truck so I get under it and have a hard time finding the drain plug. So I pull up good ol' Google and find that it should be on the passenger side of the oil pan. Lowe and behold... The fucking drain plug is sheared off in the pan...

I call the dealership and of course they're thinking I did it and get into this big argument and they proceed to tell me "Bring it in and we'll take a look at what we can do". So I of course work two jobs 70-80 hours a week, double major, and have three kids and they expect me to drive it the hour and a half back up to them and "drop it off" of course they didn't offer a loaner as they "don't have them". So I ask if I can come up today as I have the day off for once. Dude informs me they're already closed, closed tomorrow and closed Monday. So I am basically fucked.

Oh and did I mention that I was a moron and decided to just pull the filter while I looked for the plug? So now I get to put $70 worth of Mobile1 full synthetic in there just to have them drain it out and put in shit oil.

probably why you got it for 6k cheaper probably more wrong and they probably know about it too... thats why you always ask if you can take it to a mechanic.. if they say no then you know somethings up

They offered for me to which set my worries aside as they weren't worried about it. They had three of the same truck within 3k miles of each other all looked in great condition but of course I pick the lemon. They had it go through their "250 point inspection" and what I didn't know is they did the inspection sticker right there. I would have assumed they'd take it elsewhere and that gave me hope too.

That sucks, You said you were super busy and all, but a reverse cut drill bit probably would have got that drain plug out.

What is this reverse cut bit? I've used tap and die sets before but I'm worried about shavings getting into the pan and having to drop the pan...

The plug is magnetic most likely, The hardware store sells the bits, and if you go slow the bit will bite the plug and spin it out. I used them once to get some starter bolts that broke off in an engine once. Those starter bolts were up in the engine block and it worked well.

I am a tech for a dealer and have been for 10+ years. Do you know what axle the brakes were replaced on? Was it the opposite of what has failed on you? Sometimes the sales gets a car from the auction that is " Ready for Sale". The auction house states that they guarentee the brakes and tires. But if they put some cheap ass aftermarket pads, they could wear into the rotors quicker then some factory pads ( have seen this before ). As far as the oil plug goes, that just sucks. There is really nothing you can do about it, since from the sounds of it they gave you no type of a warranty when you purchased your car ( did you buy it as is? ). Hate to say it, but you did state you got the car for 6k less then every where else, there is a reason for that. Next time you purchase a car, take it down to a tech that you trust or since you bought a chevy from a chrysler dealer, take to to a chevy or at least a gm dealer for inspection. Since i work for volvo and have been for so long, i know what goes wrong with these cars and no what to look for when doing a used car inspection. If it was a Ford, I have no clue what to look for. Sorry for this to happen to you, but like we said you did get it for 6k less. Take a pic of the sheared off plug and we can see how bad it is. When someone says "sheared off", to me this meens that there is absolutley no head on the end of the bolt to grab and is perfectly flat, like a stud without a nut. Is the head rounded over?

If you were to drill it out and if anything gets in the pan, it will be flushed out when you drain the oil. Another good thing you could do is get a fairly strong magnet and put it close to the drain hole so anything that "may" end up inside the pan will stick to it. Shouldn't be that big of a deal to do. Another option could be to drop the pan and you could prob get the drain plug out from the inside and then also clean out the inside of the pan fully, but I would only drop the pan as a last ditch effort. But either way, this is fixable, so don't freak out too much and as with anything, just take your time and think ahead and make smart decisions.

That suckkssss and is pretty illegitimate, I hate it when people can't just be honest about their product. But always, always take it to a mechanic....and not the one they suggest, you can never trust the one that they could possibly be working with.
