do your own oil. There are a few things I will not let any mechanic do, oil is one of them. Plus it saves money knowing how to do your own brakes, oil, and just most maintenance stuff. and please dont get those 30 dollar oil changes.... they are making money on those, so think about the grade of oil being used.... not to mention the quality of labor.

The only reason I don't do my own oil is cause the truck came with a 2 year free oil change so I'm taking advantage of that and it's the dealership I bought the truck from so if something was wrong its on them. But once the free is gone I will do my own.

I don't trust mechanics what so ever. Once they used so much torque on my oil plug I couldn't get it off. Another they tightened my filter so much I had to stab it with two screwdrivers just to get it off. (one screw driver started to rip the metal)

And I'll leave this photo here. This is how they let me drive home 40 miles on. Wrong strut.

Putting the cap back on and having the dealer check it out was the best thing to do. It's not gonna cause any long term effects though. The engine works as a vacuum pump, all sealed up, it will run perfect. With the cap left off, it will run as though there was a vacuum leak, therefore it would run rough.

A dealership left my oil cap off once. I've changed my oil ever since. Me or my dad normally changed it before he bought a car from them. But since he bought a car from them he gets oil changes for cheaper. I called them told them my cap was missing. They couldn't find it so they ordered me one and had it there next day. I drove around with it off for like a few days. I was pissed.

There should not be any internal engine damage done, especially that there was no oil traces inside the engine compartment. I have personally seen, ( i'm a technician for a dealer) the check engine light come on due to the engine oil dipstick not being seated against the dipstick tube. It all depends on the car. Im surprised that you lost power and went through more gas?

Um... Yes.

Umm... Depends on the car. Some cars pull a vacuum while other cars simply vent whatever pressure is in there.

Given OPs problem, I'd be inclined to say that his truck pulled a vacuum. I don't think it's anything to worry about - you'd know real quick if it was low/out of oil.

BUT, I would also take this as a reminder that you should double check things yourself. Businesses are trying to get customers in and out so fast that sometimes they don't check things over as well as they should. I know you get the free oil changes, but IMO just do it yourself. You have a truck, so it's not even like you need to jack the front up to get to the oil pan. Eazy :D
