As much as I don't recommend the dmm method, it's better than "half-3/4 gain". Get a dmm, disconnect speaker wires. Connect dmm pos to speaker pos, dmm neg to speaker neg. set dmm to 54acv at your standard listening volume. I know your HU could be clipping at this point but its better than nothing. Set with 40hz tone @ -5db. Now if it still smells then start backing the gain down.
