Looking for some new tools

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for some new tools for car audio and in general, I notice that I am lacking in tools. I'm looking for large gauge wire strippers and large gauge wire cutters, like 8ga,4ga, 2ga,1/0,2/0, I am also looking for large gauge wire crimpers, I was wondering if there was a different tool for the normal ring terminals and for lugs or if they are all the same.

I was thinking of these for smaller gauge wire strippers, Irwin Self-Adjusting Wire Strippers

I would pass on the 'PassThru' ratchet set... I have a friend that has already broken a socket...

Might want to look into one of their 'Kit's that have the ratchet/box/screw drivers for a good price...

I would love to build my own tool set, but unfortunately I don't have the 5-10 grand to buy the quality tool case needed to house the tools in.

The third link was a small build what you want kit... not the monster tool box/wall that we all want... lol

Agreed, pass on the pass-through set. I think they decided to save money and make them out of cheaper material as I have had my regular Craftsmen ratchet/sockets for 15+ years without breaking any of them and the pass-through set I picked up already had 3 sockets crack.

They do replace them with their lifetime warranty, but hassle and BS none the less.

Firm believer in letting my cars do my talking!

You can't rush quality, it doesn't happen overnight. Quality takes time and dedication, but the end results more than pay for it.

I'm not a fan of the double drive screwdriver either, it just seems to strip screws more than drive them. I personally love the craftsman ratcheting screwdriver.

The pass through kit is garbage, I would pass as well. I'm personally a fan of gearwrench sockets. They are really good quality but not super expensive.

All the new craftsman sockets are Chinese made and really are kind of horrible. If you're looking for an inexpensive tool, Taiwan made is of much better quality except harbor freight. Dont get me wrong there are just somethings you buy at harbor freight, like nylon panel tools. But nothing beats an American made tool, you do pay the premium for them though.

For screw drivers, I really like this company called wiha. You can find them amazon, great grips. German made. Very nice screwdrivers.

For a large gauge crimper, eBay is your place. I personally just bought the yqk120. It is a very nice tool for being Chinese made and it does exactly what it needs to do.

The self adjusting strippers you posted are great, you will like them.

Out of every tool in my box... The channellock 909's are my most used tool, part crimper part cutters. Perfect .

I'm a Huge fan of channellock, they are really good quality and are American made.

I have the 911 cable cutters, they serve as my large gauge stripes and cutters. They are a great tool.

I could go on forever about tools.

Tooltopia is a really good site to look at good quality tools for cheaters than most places.

I have the Max Axess set and its the best thing since sliced bread for long bolts and all thread. Thats what they are designed for. if your breaking them your using them wrong.

This is my set. Totaly worth not having to use a deep dish socket or a wrench in tight places. http://www.sears.com/craftsman-51-pc-max-axess-mechanics-tool-set/p-00929309000P?prdNo=5&blockNo=5&blockType=G5

I have klein auto wire strippers, lil flush cutters with the red grips, their crimping pliers. And lot of other random shit. Klein makes nice tools

Not all of craftsmans sockets and ratchets are made in china, their smaller socket sets in stores are starting to disappear and they are slowly being replaced by made in china sets so get to a store fast and look for whatever USA stuff thats left..Soon it will just be the craftsman Pro sets that are left and still made in USA. But who knows how long that will last too.

I hear good things about certain models of the gear wrench ratchets, especially on the garagejournal forum. If there is a bad tool out there, these guys will sniff it out.

Speaking of the garagejournal surprisingly enough a lot over there seem to love the harborfreight 44" roller tool chest/cabinet. For the money it's really nice, even better then the craftsman tool cabinets. HF has pretty decent ball bearing drawer slides unline craftsmans..Lowest I seen them on sale at HF is about $349 I think. Can't beat that.

Those Irwin wire stipper are okay, there are some plastic pieces on there that I don't like. Baby them a little and they should last a decent life span.

Large gauge crimper everyone here seem to like those 8 ton crimpers on ebay.

For small gauge wire crimping DO NOT buy plier type crimpers, like the Klein ones I mentioned I had earlier or the channel lock ones someone suggested above. Crimping with those are not consistent. The crimp will only be as good as you squeeze the pliers. And if you are doing multiple splices... Well you might need some Advil or Motrin by the end of the day for your poor hands.

Do yourself a favor and buy a ratcheting crimper, they won't release until the crimp is fully complete so no half crimping where the wire can easily fall out like when you use plier type crimpers.

Best bang for the buck I would get the crimper from waytek, it's the same crimper wiha http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0015BR7P4/ref=redir_mdp_mobile sells.

It's much cheaper on waytek for the same one, buy the crimp dies there too. They have dies for the plastic insulated terminals, die for heatshrink crimp terminals, or bare terminals. And plenty other crimp dies for other jobs.
