I'll let the picture do the talking. I'm always sanding off the rust and re-painting it, but that's not a long-term solution. I was thinking some sort of durable paint-protection film, but all I can find is the stuff that's pre-cut for cars. What I need is some 2" wide tape or something.

Ideas?

Why can't you sand, bondo, prime paint, then wet sand / buff to blend, then spray clear coat?

Because the strut will rub through the paint again.

The trunk strut hits the back of the car when I close it and it eventually wears through any paint that is on there

Im a lil lost.

Why is it rusting out in the first place?

You do all the repairs in the world, but, it will keep happening if you dont repair the reason. Or am i not getting something?

Sorry bro, if i am?!

From what I have gathered, It keeps rusting out because the air shock is rubbing on the paint when the hatch is opened and closed. My thought was to stop the shock from abrading the paint first. Then repaint.

^^Yup. That's exactly what's happening

I tried spacing the shock out with washers but I can't get enough space that way
