poorfish88 Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Thanks for the mature responses john253a and alaskan2x5 !! I was not trying in the least to ask dumb "V.S." questions for this thread, really wanted to know if using just one dedicated sub with a mono amp would in the real world push more air than two 12's being just one unit instead of 2 separate units/speakers. No way to tell without building it all and measuring it all. This is the correct answer, just way too many variables.

Since you are on the same power with both options I don't see too much of an advantage to the two 12s, if you have a 15 on say 700W or 2 12s each on 700W then arguably there would be an advantage for the 12s if everything else was optimal.
XmaximuS Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I just went from a 1 15 to a 2 12s over a year ago. And from my actual experience. The 2 12's are over all louder, But the 15 played the lows a bit louder but not by much. Both subs forward firing ported enclosures sealed from the trunk setups.. 1 - 15" XXX Soundstream 2 - 12" Digital Designs 9100z(currently) X MY BUILD LOG>>>> NAH I BETTER NOT..
ChevyBoy95 Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 If they are the SAME series SAME brand, probably 1 15. Due to the fact that 2 12s would each be half powered, and you would only have slightly more cone area, as to where with 1 15, you could get it moving a lot more, and get more air displacement. But again, nothing can be set in stone until it is built and tested. alaskanzx5 Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 its would come down the the box design. from what I read in the question is if you have the same subs but 1 is a 15 and 2 are 12's then chances are you could very well have the same motor and sized voice coil. the only difference would be one has a 15" basket and the others a 12" basket. assuming subs are all 700rms so knowing 2 12s is more cone area you could be moving more air with them. however you would only be giving them 350watts each. the lower power can be dealt with by using a bigger box since we know in most cases a bigger box can provide more output. bigger box would have less back pressure on the the cones of the 12s allowing them to move more freely so being underpowered they would still be able to move. a single 15 on 700watts in a box with in recommended volume would be getting moved by the power as it should since its being ran at rms. so in theory you would be able to have a smaller box with this setup while possibly getting the same output. with similar tuning and freq range it would be hard to tell the difference between the setups with out the use of an rta and spl meter. I personally would go with the 2 12's, ive had 2 12's on 750rms each and a single 15 on 1500 rms each. all subs where t2d4 subs on a t1500.1bdcp. the 2 12s where louder on a meter at the same freq as the single 15. the boxes where not built equal though and the 12's could have been in a bigger box with more port area since they where underpowered and would have increased there score some imo. so from my personal exp 2 12's where louder. however I preferred the sound of the single 15. it wasn't louder but played lows better, most because the lower tuning of the box imo. once again though in that exp of mine its about the box design. t1500bdcp 2 t2d4 15" 1 t600.4 1 t400.2 1 set p1 tweets singer alt, tons of wiring, smd vm-1, 80prs, back seat delete, still in the works, aiming for a 145-147 with the ability to play 25hz up to 50hz.
Rck'nRF Posted February 24, 2014 Author Report Posted February 24, 2014 What a great bunch of reponses!!!! Will go through it when i have more time, love reading such information.. I really like the idea of using 15's,they just look so much more vicious starring back at a person than 12's. Thx dudes!
Joe X Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 If you are staying on the same power you won't get the full benefit of going with 2 12s, I'd say go for a 15", it will be less expensive. If you are planning to upgrade your power later the yes you have something to win going with 2 12s.
john253a Posted February 25, 2014 Report Posted February 25, 2014 The main question is Do you plane to spend the same on 2x12 as 1x15 Or do you have your heart set on a certain mdl For argument sack 2x sa12 v's 1x X15 Or 2x e12 v's 1x sa15 Very close to the same price And yet souch a very different outcome
