Shop said they dont use DD1 or Oscope to tune. they do it by ear. Should i trust them?

I think there are places for both the ear-o-meter and the o-scope. If you want a decent sounding system that will absolutely blow away a stock system, the ear-o-meter will get that job done. If you compete and are chasing numbers and want 100% out of your system, you need diagnostic equipment.

It's like car building. You can build one hell of a saturday night cruiser in your garage. If you are bracket or drag racing, you're probably gonna wanna get your engine dyno tuned.

I've installed dozens of systems by the ear-o-meter and never had a component fail. (until the owner messed with the gains) I will use the ear-o-meter on my own ride, but I'm just a parking lot cruiser, I'll never compete.

If I was going to compete, I would use a dd-1 or o-scope to get the most out of my equipment.

It's not black and white. There is room for both in the car audio world.

You got the "getting the most 100% out of your system" part right. That is the object of setting the gains PROPERLY. If you don't, you aren't. A little bit of ear-o-meter is ok once you have established your boundries and are backing DOWN from that boundry (while setting overlaps). It has nothing to do with "chasing numbers". It's about being proper. Please re-read the part where i talk about the gains ONLY job being to be matched to the maximum clean output of the deck. That is what it is there for. It isn't a volume knob. That "guy" who messed with the gain settings didn't do anything worse then what you did. You both just "guessed" really.

I've use my ears to tune and never blown neither

Once I got a dd1 it's much easier, I'm starting at my maximum point MAYBE after I may lower it

woofers are more forgiving then tweeters.....and ill be a monkeys uncle if 98% of us haven't smoked a tweeter or even a mid from the gains or xovers being incorrect. If you haven't, you haven't installed enough systems in your life time. I know i have.

I've done it. Puzzled me for days/weeks back in the day since I couldn't hear a problem. Wish I had my DD-1 back then.

The shop i'm getting my system installed at says that they don't use a DD1 or Oscilloscope to tune woofers. They said they do it by ear. Its gonna be 2 13w7s. would hate to blow them. Should i trust the shop?

I wouldn't, whose ears are going to listen and how good is that persons hearing? Sounds like trouble to me.

been to a dozen shops locally , all said they tune by ear, no o-scope , & these are the shops that install maybe 80% of the local

systems ! .... ive wasted gas , time & breath . tryin to push the real !!!!!

^That's sad and honestly if they don't want to pay for equipment to help their customers and earn their business to come back again. Sounds sketchy and isn't trustworthy let alone caring IMO. A dd-1 isn't that expensive to risk the customers equipment and have tensions between customers. I'd lose sleep over any job if I didn't believe it was safe or done right even if that job is for me.

I've blown and smoked more woofers than I have tweeters and or mids but it was fun the first couple times. ;)

its amazing to me how many topics are here about the dd-1 and o-scope , Yet the same people who argue the ear o meter works are still saying it does, You can hear clipping/distortion etc etc etc etc... yet never grasp what you use the dd-1 or o-scope for..
