How bad/good is polypropylene?

Sorry, did not mean to make this a complicated post. The reason I asked is because I was wondering how decent the JBL GTO subs are; they use a polypropylene woofer; I battled with the idea of running 4 of the 10" or maybe 12" ones if I could fit them. But it is hard to persuade me to change from running a pair of 12" AA Chaos...idk...first world probs right lol

I would go with the AAs. Depends on what you listen to and how you're setup.

Dubstep mainly, but also, mainstream pop stuff. And setup: I have a RF T1500 amp not cp model. I would prolly wire AAs to 0.5 or if i got the JBLs then I would ire to 1ohm.

meh I would ditch the JBL idea. Fi or Psi if you can't afford the AAs. JBL doesn't have a lot of bad products I just wouldn't run their subs unless it was a pro audio application.

I hear ya man, I really wanted to run the JBL Gtti MKII, that thing looks beastly. But I would only be able to wire down to 1.5ohms. So I would have to get another amp down the road...

hah, well .5 is hard on a amp. Hell 1ohm is hard on an amp. Rockford puts out a good product but if you are daily driving that thing, just because it CAN do .5 ohms doesn't mean it will do it all day every day for years. Just a thought.

Well, my thought was with box rise it would be at least 1 ohm anyways.

I've proved my point, performance can branch off into spl levels and all sorts of stuff. I said sound (tone). & from my personal experience I can't notice anything. Here's a source if you need it.. http://www.data-bass.com/myths

The material absolutely affects the tone. If you think otherwise perhaps you should stop thinking.

Perhaps it is much less obvious in bass frequencies but you can sure as Hell hear it in tweeters and midranges

I agree thats why the better poly cone speakers are composites or mineral filled.

In speakers & tweets, hell yeah. Were talking about subwoofers here, and your not going to notice a difference period. If someone wants to bring a legit test (subwoofers) under the correct circumstances, I live in Newport, AR, pack a lunch & come on down. I would like to hear it.

Materials doesn't effect the sound of the woofer, if your judging based off of that route. Polypropylene is a sturdy material, so I don't see it being a bad material for a subwoofer cone.

It ever does so affect the sound of a sub, as well as all speakers ever made.

I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . .

What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself

but what has drawn your attention

in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums

An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space

Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears,

thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener.

How would this be tested? You would have to have 2 identical subwoofers except for the cone. I still don't see how they would sound the same though.

It doesn't matter what frequency you play you will still get the resonance of the material used.

Polypropylene is reasonably rigid, has inherently high internal damping, and is totally non-hygroscopic. Without a particularly high stiffness to weight ratio.

Other materials such as aluminum or Kevlar-backed have a slight ring to them as it is the materials nature to resonate as such.

This is what I was thinking, without the technical terms though. In my mind, if cone material is that important to all other speakers, why would it not be important to subs?
