amp tuning negative dB ?

Well i met a guy locally who has a DD1 and we tuned my HU and amp. Put in the SMD cd on track 1 40hz 0 dB my kenwood x399 excelon series puts out 35/35 clean, moved to amp. Guy asked me to change to track 5 40hz @-10 dB. I asked what the difference was he said between SQ and loud. Tuned my amp gain almost 1/2 way before distortion detected. Any who WOW jebus !!!! Bass is so much louder and powerfull i NEED to invest in a DD1 for future builds.

So my question is i listen to all kinds of bass synicate, bass patrol, bass meckanic, decaf, DJSNT. Being tuned at -10 dB can i listen to modified music at same volume as regular music ? Or do i need to cut some volume on my sub outs on the deck, i think to goes from -10 to +10 maybe modified music set it at -3 to be safe ? But i though that was the point of using -10 dB @ 40 hz for tuning vs just using 40 hz @ 0 dB was for that "space"

It depends on the level that the music is at. If unedited music is recorded with sub bass levels at -10dB or lower such as -15dB, then your amplifier being set at -10dB is fine unless the music is already clipped in which case you just shouldn't be listening to it. If it's recorded higher than -10dB (-2.5dB, -5dB) then you need to turn the volume down. And the same applies for edited music. And that is what Steve Meade's OM-1 meter does for you. If it's a higher level recorded song than what you set the gains for, you can damage your subs quickly, but if it's lower, then you're fine, it just won't be as loud as other songs. You should be fine with -10dB for most music, but you can find a clean -7.5dB 40hz track on here to use instead and feel a little safer if you want.

alot of people coincider -10db a pretty radical tune and choose a custom -7.5 at most.... if you listen to special bass tracks just be careful because you might smell something bad.... or try to have it redone with a -5db but you will lose some of the awesomness you were speaking about

I usually just put on dj magic mike or bass 305 on pandora, other than that its just FM radio. He gave the DD1 and walked me through the steps and we tuned it, he never asked but i gave him $20 when we were done. Glade to know im clean 35/35 on my kenwood and have my amp properly set now. Im sure heavy clipping will be noticable, i will listen for negative changes in my bass and just turn the HU down if i hear it or smell the coils getting hot. These subs jump now it crazy seeing them "dance" it didnt do much of that before.

I will focus on the -7.5 dB when i get my own DD1, for now i will just listen to how my subs are playing. Im just curious why he wanted to tune at -10 instead of -5 or even zero.

If -10 is radical why is there a -15 on the SMD cd ? Is that for setting up comp amplifiers on custom made music ?

There's -15dB because there is an extreme for everything in this world. You could use the -15dB if you wanted, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you have an OM-1 and a PAC lc-1 to turn it down immediately without losing your mids and highs as well. -10dB isn't that radical in my opinion, not for most music.

for decaf -7.5

djsnt -5

got160s -2.5

normal music that isn't too bass heavy should be chill at -10
