TLAH 2-way build

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine has asked me to build him a pair of speaker for his living room. We decided to go with the Bill Fitzmaurice TLAH design. I've been sitting on the parts forever and I've finally been able to get going on them. I figured I post pics of the build in case anyone is interested.

I've already made a bit of progress on them, but I'll be updating this thread as go from here on out.

This is a REALLY easy design to build. I modified it from the plans a little bit to get the visual look I'm going for. There just isn't much to building them.

Here I'm getting started on the baffle, I've got the holes for the tweeters cut. About half the work of building this cabinet is cutting out holes:

Holes for the mids cut, and everything has been rounded over:

Every driver hole has 4 screw to go with it. That's 168 pilot holes for screws:

Gluing the side panels to the baffle:

Side panels on:

Gluing in the cleats that the back attaches to:

That's where I'm at so far.

Well I finally got my friend to pick what stain he wanted so I was able to make some more progress.

Here they are ready to be stained:

The stain my friend wants is actually a two-part stain. Red mahogany over cinnamon. Here I've just put on the cinnamon under coat:

Next is the red mahogany top coat:

With the stain done I have the sides masked off and I'm ready to begin surface prep on the fronts. I just got done painting some wood glue mixed with water on the edges of the MDF to seal it:

That's all the progress for now.

More progress, got the fronts primed and lacquered.

Here is the black lacquer right after it was applied:

Masking has been removed:

I've got some little touch-ups to do and then they will be ready for clear lacquer. The water-based stains on the sides leave them looking pretty dry. Once I put some lacquer on them it will warm them up quite a bit and should even out the sheen on the fronts. Hopefully I'll be able to do that tomorrow.
