Wil84 Posted February 21, 2016 Report Posted February 21, 2016 I have a 99 Chevy Suburban. I bought a rebuilt alternator that is 300 amps I also have a red top optima battery that I bought about 5 to 6 years ago but only used it for about two years of its life I recently installed two sets of Kicker 6 1/2 to a hifonics 600 watt 4 channel amp. My speakers sound great everything is tuned in and dialed in but when I hooked it up. My voltage went from 14 to 12 what could be the problem the ground is clean and the voltage never moves down or up even when I play the music loud it just stays at 12 volts the truck starts up fine so I can't figure it out.
reedal Posted February 21, 2016 Report Posted February 21, 2016 12v according to what meter, measured from what point? What brand alt? What's the resting voltage of that battery after the engine has been off overnight? Wil84 Posted February 21, 2016 Author Report Posted February 21, 2016 The alternator was rebuilt at a shop that rebuilds alternators and starters so it's just a local company that did it as far as the voltage I read it off the dash I didn't put a voltmeter on it or anything. But I was reading the voltage on my dash it was always saying 14 volts and after I hook the amp up I realize that it said 12 volts.
Wil84 Posted February 21, 2016 Author Report Posted February 21, 2016 I'm check the voltage right off the battery tomorrow.
everybodyknowme Posted February 21, 2016 Report Posted February 21, 2016 I had a 99 burban with the same problem. it's the grounds. Redo all grounds (and I hope you did the big 3) They have to be solid as a rock on that truck. Also get a true meter.

reedal Posted February 21, 2016 Report Posted February 21, 2016 Either your rebuilt alt is faulty, or your dash meter isn't accurate. I'm leaning towards the meter, but use a DMM to read your voltage with the engine running, with the system off and with it playing.
