RooTxBeeR Posted May 14, 2016 Report Posted May 14, 2016 I am going camping and was planning on bringing up a slow cooker and air mattress so I grabbed a power convertor so I can use a car battery to do so. I have a question though, the air mattress I am not worried about because, it will take a minute to inflate. Using the slow cooker however, the thing I want to cook is about 8-10 hours cook time. Let's say the slow cooker is a 100 watt slow cooker. If I am trying to figure out the current draw it will demand from the 12v battery system, so I can tell how long it can last for before it needs to charged, or engine turned on. How would I go about that? I know W = V x A, but the cooker is a 115v connection, converted to 12v. So how would I properly figure out it's draw. I know 100watts = 115volts x .87amps, but how does that relate down to the current draw on the 12v system? Don't want to get stranded in the bush with a dead battery and no way home lmao. Ahmed Johnson Posted May 14, 2016 Report Posted May 14, 2016 I had a 400 watt power converter and that thing pulled power like a 1500 watt amp. I can't really give you an answer, just my experience. For that 400 watt converter, the original wires it came with melted real fast so I did my own 4 gauge wire and that started getting hot so I put 0 gauge and it was fine. And it was a cheap schumacher from wal mart but it did work fine for 2 200 watt small heaters with my 275 alt and 2 batteries in the back

My bed, as well as everyone elses, is filled with dirtbikes, no room for a grill lol On 11/20/2012 at 8:54 PM, AMI CUSTOMS said: Turned mine up today at a light, guy next to me his steering wheel started moving and he looked over at me like I was a magician lol. DrewJones Posted May 14, 2016 Report Posted May 14, 2016 You'll be pulling about 8.33 amps of current constantly, + some for efficiency stuff. Call it 9 amps. Say you have a 100amp hour battery, you'd get 11.11 hours of run time off of it. But you won't be starting anything at that point. I will be using it for more things so would love to be able to pull the math out and see how long it cna last before it needs a charge. And too, the cooker I was looking at, is pretty much same power requirment of that one. If I had to use a slow cooker then I would bring a second battery to cook with. None around, but I will be in the camp the entire time. Could very easily just start it up and let it run for a couple of minutes.
