IH8PunkRok
I don't really know how many times I have read about 4th orders and seen comments like "I like a 1:1 anything bigger is too peaky" "big ratios are peaky and sound bad" Peaky peaky peaky That's the buzzword with 4ths. Recently I built one. See what Peaky really means 2 18s 3500 watts 6 sealed 20 ported Plots out as so in BBP Peaky By the time I get to 30 hz it'll be 9 db down!?! This will surely sound like shit. But it doesnt. In fact it plays the lows astoundingly well. Why? I don't hear that 47 hz peak either. Strange. Lets investigate 25 burps later I have data I compiled the data into a couple graphs and found a pretty interesting result SPL in Blue Power in red From 27-46 I have a 1.5 db range which I consider pretty flat. Figured I'd share my experience. Maybe push some people who are on the edge to try one. frogcase2002
Alot has to do with the vehicle also. I also have tried 4th order bandpasses that dont look to good on paper but were pretty decent in the vehicle. hdorre
I was a 3.5:1 4th. It was noticeable how flat it was from ~27 to 55ish (as high as id play). People commented time and time again how flat it was. I wish i hit the TL to record data before I tore it out. Ive got friends with 4th order walls as well. The smallest we try to use is 3:1. On paper, it may look peaky, but the real world is a different animal as you know. Besides, we like output.. right? Joe X
The bump at the low end is definitely cabin gain, the modeling software needs more data to display a more realistic plot of the situation (happily unlike WinISD BBP is designed to be able to adapt somewhat), there is also cancellation, losses, etc and the location of the mic to do the readings to explain why you get what you are getting. It would be great if you gave detailed specs of your enclosure and some pics of the install if you want greater insight on your results.
Triticum Agricolam
What subs were you using? What vehicle? What were the specs on the port? It's nice to see numbers/graphs to go along with what you are describing. Not many people provide that. In addition the the environmental factors that affect frequency response, the parameters of the sub have a big effect as well. A high Vas, high QTS sub is going to have a LOT broader bandwidth than a low Vas, low QTS sub when put into the same spec box, for example. Over generalized statements ("high aspect ratio boxes are/are not peaky") are universally ill conceived. Every situation is different. Also, bandpass box ratios are dumb. :-) "Nothing prevents people from knowing the truth more than the belief they already know it.""Making bass is easy, making music is the hard part."Builds:
ShadeTreeMechanic
It seems to me that the low end response is the sealed section. Below port tuning it would not make the second chamber and port resonate. It would just play through the port like it wasn't there. if the port is big enough. 91 C350 Centurion conversion ( Four Door One Ton Bronco) 250A Alternator (Second Alternator Coming Soon) G65 AGM Up Front / Two G31 AGM in Back Pioneer 80PRS CT Sounds AT125.2 / CT Sounds 6.5 Strato Pro component Front Stage CT Sounds AT125.2 / Lanzar Pro 8" coax w/compression horn tweeter Rear Fill FSD 5000D 1/2 ohm (SoundQubed 7k Coming Soon) Two HDS315 Four Qubes Each 34hz (Two HDC3.118 and New Box Coming Soon)
