rocking.that.eclipse
Right now I have a class all about the structure and designing a lithium battery. We have to do a research paper on one chemistry of lithium ion (yes there is more than just LiFePo and LiFePo4) and I came across this article. http://www.digitaltrends.com/cool-tech/glass-battery-technology/ Now for some this may just seem like hype but the last time Goodenought announced a new battery he was working on it ended up evolving into the lithium batteries that we see today. We also had presentations for different anode (negative) and cathode (positive) materials and sodium came up as a viable answer with some hurdles to overcome and it sounds like Goodenough has figured out these hurdles. Any thoughts? Also the dendrites that are mentioned in the article are the main reason that lithium batteries can be unsafe. The dendrite is somewhat like a branch/ needle that grows out and shorts the battery microscopically. Baiscally it grows from the negative layer of the battery through the electrolyte and into the positive layer creating a short. I got lots of little knowledge to some chemistry from doing a paper on lithium ion battery chemistries 2 years ago so if you want to ask some other questions I'll take a shot at answering. WalledSonic
Your comment about dendrites reminds me of a phenomenon in the industrial world that occurs when bare copper is exposed to moisture/humidity while carrying high voltage (typically 1000VAC and up). On a 3 phase bus, 'whiskers' (i.e. dendrites) of copper precipitate from one phase to another phase OR from one phase to ground. When the whiskers grow long enough to reach the adjacent phase or ground, BOOM. This is why high voltage copper conductors commonlly have tin or silver plating, to prevent these dendrites. Not sure my comment helps necessarily, but figured I'd toss in some input from the High Voltage AC domain (I design the mechanical aspects of 3 phase AC electric motors). Keep bringing that knowledge! rocking.that.eclipse
Dendrite formation is common when adding voltage or even when casting something. In my materials class we cast aluminum billets and looked at the dendrite formations for different compositions.
