HHR Ed Posted January 8, 2010 Report Posted January 8, 2010 thats what im saying if you have your 18 tuned how it should be there should be noo mids at all!10's and 12's can hit all those and still sound good but you loose ALLLLL your power in your lows! play "old school cars" on and 18 and then play it on a !!few!! 10's or 12's it wound sound good at all youd be lucky if you even heard the beat!! 8's, 10s, 12's, 15s, and 18s can all be made to play the entire frequency range very smoothly and equally. It depends on the enclosure. You can design an enclosure to have a flat frequency response with any size sub. Are you basing all your opinions on your experience with only your woofer in your car? If so, retune your box and I garauntee you will have a different opinion. wildcard4040 Posted January 8, 2010 Report Posted January 8, 2010 I think tiller is having a hard time getting his point across due to his lack of communication skills. :01nocomment8so: To the OP, It will depend on power, If you are running the same power on your 18's as your 12's then there should be no issues. If you up the power on your woofers then most likely expect to up the power on mids and highs as well. i think i just gave myself a concussion i facepalmed so hard. and for the 1's that dont like me..... well, Im still here fuckers. Cant get rid of me that easy.

HHR Ed Posted January 8, 2010 Report Posted January 8, 2010 I must add that it also depends on the actual woofer in use. Every woofer has a natural resonant frequency. This is known as the Fs. Fs of a woofer is determined by cone material, weight, suspension stiffness. And also cone size will affect this. Usually a larger cone will have a lower Fs, but this in no way means that it cannot play accurately in the high bass range. I think this is where the stereotype of 18s are for lows and 10s are for punchiness came from. The truth is, you can have a 10 with an Fs of 29 hz because of the suspension and cone material and an 18 with an Fs of 39hz. Fs is only the natural resonance of the woofer with no enclosure. The enclosure plays an integral part in controling how that cone moves and how the wave reacts with the air around it. The box can be made to have any size woofer play low or high, or both. spl4life Posted January 8, 2010 Report Posted January 8, 2010 My buddy is convinced that i will lose all of my midbass if i switch from 2 12's to 2 18's. I know there is some truth to this but do i need to be worrying about adding more midbass? I know a ton of you guys run 18's and i was wondering what your results were........btw the box will be tuned to 33hz and my current box is 36-37ish theres ur problem... if your so concerned about mid bass... tune high or get some 8's or 10's in your door... if you say ur new box will be tuned lower... then yea higher notes will drop off more... noo you lose all of it! the woofer kind of just makes a funny noise.thats why when you see people on you tube they use the same songs over and all the songs never have mid or high bass 18's are strictly for lows problems with that statement... 1. woofer makes a funny noise???? 2. ppls vids on youtube are either a) didnt power the mids (running mids of HU) or have unbalanced gain settings... or the most popular... c) have real bad cameras that dont pick up anything else other than the overpowering vibrations in the air called bass... 3.i got a dc lvl 5 18" in a Tline tuned to 40hz... i would say my higher bass notes is fine... subs are subs... made for bass notes... mid bass drivers are mid bass drivers.... made for mid bass... yes there are alot of exceptions to the rules... its all depends on enclosure design I must add that it also depends on the actual woofer in use.Every woofer has a natural resonant frequency. It puts it into perspective. Just imagine a stadium filled to the top with peas. Sounds like one hell of a soup lol
cvxsmitty58 Posted January 8, 2010 Author Report Posted January 8, 2010 i was more referring to the 45-55hz range. not like midbass out of a door speaker. Like say for instance the high note in hypnotize. i had a shitty prefab ported box that hit that note way louder than my current box i built. would a box tuned to 33 still produce that note at a loud level? basically you guys explained what i was wondering and now i know im gonna go with the 18's. Btw im highly considering the aq2200d. Is that a good amp for 2 18 ssd's?

kirill007 Posted January 8, 2010 Report Posted January 8, 2010 If 10's can't hit lows, then you have never heared a 10" sub in a Tline. Hit's all frequency's, to below 25hz, big rollof starting at 22-23hz. I also have speaker's (home audio) with 17" subs, and they hit in a ported box everything below 100hz. You're thinking totally wrong tiller1. It all depends on Fs and if it's a woofer or subwoofer, and mostly the enclosure is realy important. So listen to HRR Ed he knows a lot, everything he said in this thread is correct. Thinking is the root of all problems... You ALWAYS get what you pay for.
