Misconception about Batteries?

Recommended Posts

ya we all heard about capacitors and how they are pointless, but today i was talking to my local install shop and the owner there was tellin me that using an extra battery in your setup doesnt ultimatley keep your voltage up nor do much of anything. he also said that if i were to buy a extra battery for the trunk that it would need to be the exact same as the brand in the front or it will cause problems.

from what i see and hear from these forums is that i could buy, say, a audioque 2200, throw a kinetik 1800 or so in there and ill be fine.

is he wrong? what do you guys think

A battery stores large ammounts of power so if you get a load your alternator can not handle it keeps the voltage in the safe zone much longer. Being exactly the same would even be more important than just the brand.

ppl same run the same battery...i say it doesnt really matter...but could be way off

as far as batteries not helping...well, if ur car is OFF and ur blastin ur system he is right..with no alternator power to keep the batteries filled, they will go dead eventually...more batteries=bigger alternator

caps have their place...and imo they are in sq cars...i feel like a daily driver is better served with larger alts and extra batteries...

i likes me some audio stuff...

Yes he is wrong, it helps you have more resereve to pull from. Thats why you see all these Huge builds with big batt banks. But ultimately a HO alt(s) will help you the most, cause if your stock alt is already having a really hard time keeping one stock battery charged, imagine it trying to keep mulitple large AGM batts topped off. Its not impossible as to some users on this site do it, but I think a lot of them also have them charging at with a charger.

if they dont do much of anything, then why would people run such large battery banks? for aesthetics?

ya thats what i tried to tell him and he said if i dont want dimmin/voltage drop the only thing i should do is a ho alternator

so lets say i am gonna be running a aq 2200 in my stock truck, should i replace the stock battery with a better one? or jus get a nice battery for the trunk?

I'd get a high output alternator before I got a second battery. If you don't have the amperage from the alternator to keep both batteries charged, then what is the point?

well my stock electrical stays at 14.5-14.7 even when i start my car in the morning cold, and the 2200 will only be about 2000 so is it even necessary to spend the money on an alternator
