Electrical strong enough for .5 ohm?

Recommended Posts

Many people forget that rail voltage is not the only limitation of an amp. The outputs also have a current limitation. So while setting gains using a scope based on voltage is great, once the load is connected you may surpass the amps current output limitation and get magic smoke. . .

Running an amp at lower than advertised impedance takes more than just knowing how to set gains and having a great electrical system. You have to be experienced enough to judge what is going on while the system is playing. . .

son of a bitch NOW you scared me for life to run at lower then rated..

but nice to know :drinks:

Thanks guys, you are right.. I know thats more than the subs can handle so ot looks like ill have to get new subs to take full advantage of the amps. Sucks cuz they are almost brand new, less than 3 weeks of use to this day and wish i got d2s.... Does anyone have any ideas on some good 12" subs that will handle the 3.5ks? And something that wont break the bank either! Lol

If you have to ask, DONT DO IT!!!

Everyone here is giving you bad advice, and shouldnt be telling a newbie to do this...

I agree with this now.

Also, I don't think those subs will take 4000rms each...

I emailed AQ a few weeks ago and they said alums take 2-3k daily, but 4k daily... I don't know...

I also heard the aluminum coils sound way better with alot of power to them too(2k plus)...seeing as they are brand new i think ill stick with them for a lil bit but im taking suggestions and ideas

The best advice I can give is to run them at 2ohm daily, and for shows, do .5 ohm AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

Running any amps at .5ohms nowadays will void the warranty...

Who would know if you ran 0.5 ohm ? :ehh:

Failure modes can tell you a lot about what caused the failure. . .

Running high current is going to cause obvious damage if pushed to the point of failure. If the amp fails for some other defect, they may never know. Chance you take running at low impedances.

Current system:

1997 Blazer - (4) Customer Fi NEO subs with (8) American Bass Elite 2800.1s

Previous systems:

2000 Suburban - (4) BTL 15's and (4) IA 40.1's = 157.7 dB at 37 Hz.

1992 Astro Van - (6) BTL 15's and (6) IA 40.1's = 159.7 dB at 43 Hz.
