Chevy V8 basic MPG improvements?

Recommended Posts

cai, exhaust, and true tune. my truck is a 99 5.3 z71 with 3.73 gears on 33s and im getting 19 on the highway running 80 im sure if i was to run the speed limit i would actually get alot better

Wow, sounds like what I need. Same truck pretty much, but I won't be on 33's, lol, just standard all-terrain tires. Maybe gonna try to find a set of newer Chevy wheels and pop 'em on. But what exhaust would you all recommend then? And where would be the best place to find a "true tuner"?

my exhaust is 2.5 inch from cats back to two single chamber spintech mufflers then all the way out the back. i had all the pipes bent instead of buying a kit. and i am also about to put some long tube headers and get rid of cats.

For a tuner i used Wheatley in Houston. hes a great guy to deal with just look him up online at gowheatley.com and email him and tell him what you want done to it. he will send you a new pcu and you just plug it in and go through the security bypass and have fun. youll gain about 30 hp and torque plus gain some good mpg.

Wheatley or Blackbear Performance for the tune, definitely. The superchips handheld tuners are decent, but they are nothing compared to a full tune from one of the aforementioned shops. Expect to spend around $250 to $350 for a custom tune, though.

Also, a low temp thermostat and electric fans, if you dont already have them.

only down side, is a BB tune only last 1 time.

All you have to do is send your PCM back in and they will update it for you free of charge or solely the shipping charge, unless you swap from a different generation of motors(aka my Vortec 350 L31 to a 5.3 LM7).

I agree with everything said here as far as exaust I would look at flowmaster and magnaflow..also borla but I am not sure wha they offer with the v8 setup...

If you do exhaust I would do a full header back system so you get good clean flow

CAI, Tune, transmission tune (lockup point), aerodynamic kit (tape, lol).

Any time you have have a power wire next to your frame put some rubber hosing (or cut up an innertube) around it. The wire is bound to wiggle (due to driving or flex) and the casing will eventually wear through.

Electric fan swap, tune, longtube headers, full exhaust, cai. then Add 4 alts and 2000+ lbs and you get 11.5 mpg in town lol

I have gained 2mpg city (nothing highway) running premium gas in my 4.3 v6 (which is a Chevy 350 minus 2 cylinders). I don't have to get on the gas as much to accelerate with premium in the tank and my engine sounds better. I didn't notice the improvement until 2 tanks later when the ECU finally adjusted.

I'm gonna hate

Buy a V6... the way I see it is if you have a v8 better expect the mileage it comes with. Spending all the money to save at the pump will take a bunch of time cause you have to "pay off" what you just spent to get "better mileage first. You will wont notice it at the pump.

Find a beater 4cyl car

Thats cool. Im way too old to be upset by shit like that. Your name is winston. Your own parents hated you even before you were born.

My penis is bigger than your penis

I'm far from loud and my roof/headliner flaps around like Adam's ass on a windy day. I think it depends more on the structure of the vehicle.

Looks like buying a v6 or another car has the same problem...
