raytard Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 07sonata, where was that at, this oswego joke of a shop? and salespeople have to know ALOT about a SHITLOAD of stuff they carry, I had to learn kenwood, pioneer, alpine, mtx, orion, kicker, monster, stinger, jl, eclipse, jvc, clarion, bazooka, rockford, xm, sirius, just for friggin starters. My shop uses model numbers in the computer, so i basically had to learn model numbers for everything, features, rms ratings, features, outputs, inputs, and how to set the friggin clocks. it really took a straight year to learn everything, and then CES comes around and they change EVERYTHING! customers dont care about model numbers, they care about price and features, and to sell you have to know that stuff, and then know how to work it well enough to show them how to use it, and help them if they decide they want to do time alignment on their jvc and need to know where it is in the menu if you know 1/2 of what you carry, you're ahead of most. to know anything about distributer direct equipment, stuff you dont carry, or stuff noone ever buys (like a kicker warhorse, or t15k), you have to be a certified audio nut. it has helped mel to know about all of these brands, these forums, and old school stuff. I've definately sold whole systems to people because i knew what they meant when they talked about how great their nakamichi deck in a benzi box sounded back in the day, and can show them the new hotness of a pioneer prs or something similar. Or what a BTL was, and what kind of box it should go in off the top of my head. being that one person that goes "we did a set last month in a huge box, like 7 cubes apiece with 14sq in of port per cube, it slammed" will get you the whole job. you'll never find anyone in any shop that will know about diablo or FI or anything, especially because they cant even carry that stuff, so many of these companies are direct. personally I spend my free time, learning about stuff, i pride myself atleast having a general idea of whats out there and what the competition sells and what customers might drag in. Not everyone has the time or motivation to find out about stuff they will never sell. Clif Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 hell, I was in the local audio shop (audiospecialists) trying to find an alright amp to run the single RE 8 I got, needed something that could do 300w rms clean (yea, im a poor lil' bastard, and I believe in buying a bigger amp and turning it down, rather than buying a smaller amp and turning it up, because we all know that clipping kills speakers) and he asks what im running, I tell him "RE Audio RE 8", and he starts trying to sell me a JL 1w8 saying that RE is low quality chinese crap, Was a rather fun day. I ended up buying the amp on Audiosavings.com for 80 and saved like 200 dollars of what he was trying to sell the same amp to me for. Audiosavings FTW. (if anyone's wandering, Clif Designs CD20.2LX) love audio savings, almost as much as i love my clif designs amps, mids, and highs. never tried there subs though. 03 Trailblazer EXT LT In Dash Rear Flip Down Polk Audio Font & Rear Stage Hifonics Zeus 4 Chan Amp Hifonics Brutus Mono Amp 12" Rockford Fosgate Power HX2 T-Line tuned to 45hz 18"BTL T-line @31Hz (9 weeks pregnant)
theabunai Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 What bugs me is that these "shops" are losing a chunk of sales by putting down other brands... I work at a shop in hawaii and I am certain that everyone in my shop knows about fi, Sundown, DC sounds, Ascendant Audio, DAT, Stereo Integrity etc etc.. For the main reason people are talking about here... I would be more trustworthy to a shop that knew about these products then didn't or put them down... I can remember on so many peoples faces when they try to pull the "wonder if they heard of Fi" and i say YES.. We've done many enclosures for BTL's BL's Q's , SSd's and even the occasional X series as well... All off a Sundown 3000D... The have a totally NEW face on and we end up seeing them more often.. It baffles me why shops won't just LEARN about other brands.... Now whenever someone ordes a sundown or Fi they come straight to our shop to pay us Labor (which is 1000% profit for the shop) for us to put it in... My shop would rather take advantage of the internet brands out there then bash them... The old adage of "if you can't beet them, join them" Now when someone from Hawaii orders a Fi, DC sounds, Sundown, SI mag, Ascendant Audio they usually come straight to us bypassing all the other shops that called these brands "crap" to give us their money to help install or build enclosures... It's even more rewarding when these users of so called "crap" come to local comps and dominate... then when people ask where you got the stuff they say "from the internet, oh and Mobile Car Audio built the enclosure for me/ installed and set the amp for me since they know alot about this brand go there they are the experts" Ascendant Audio Hawaii Rep Sundown Audio Hawaii Rep

Neo_frog Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 That's what I love about my shop out here. They have always been open to suggestions about other brands and take the time to learn more if they see me using something new. They've even been thinking about picking up DC recently... It only sucks because I'm like their only customer and the only reason they are still open. I try to go to as many comps/shows as I can to keep them open and bring in business, but there's really no market out here. That's why you guys hardly ever see me expand from anything other than Memphis. Need an install? Hit me up.[email protected]Got car audio questions?
