  1. Dude - subs have to have alts bro. I had 16 10's in my suburban one time with only 1 alt. Still not sure how I did it.
  2. No. he is correct to a point. i took 50 inches of port from my port, was able to burp more power and gained a little on the meter. if the port is to big it messes with the pressure inside the enclosure. my subs would unload completly under 32hz and cone control is non exsistent. shunk the port down and got the cone control i needed. but i was also around 22 inches per cube on the port. added a little more backpressure and all was good. Were you burping below your tuning frequency? Are you sure your tuning frequency and net volume stayed exactly the same? I would bet more variables changed than just the port area.
  3. I'll take it a step further and say that technically power does not matter. A sub might reach 20mm of excursion on 1000 watts in one design and 20mm of excursion on only 500 watts in another design. You really have to just account for full excursion, unless you are really trying to minimize port area. At that point I would model the design with the max input power and see what the max excursion would be.
  4. No, No, No!!! The box can shrink to help the mechanical power handling, but the port area does not have to. One more time - port area is not dependent on box volume. . .

  6. Somebody is going to need to know what vehicle and how much room you have. . .
  7. As stated, Xmax is not the only factor related to loudness. What enclosure do you plan to use, and how much power? What type of music do you listen to the most? Do you want really strong low frequency response, or just SPL regardless of the frequency it occurs? Both subs are awesome, but they were designed for different goals.
  8. Cut and paste, whatever he is doing normally looks pretty good. Both of you still have not figured out port area is NOT related to box volume. And I find it funny he suggested 15-16 sqin and you suggest 13-14. In a 3-4 cuft box, 6-8 sqin difference in your suggestions and you jump on him??? Thats funny. . .
  9. No, you cannot use that logic. At one time, AA had the assassin in a single 4 ohm coil. PM me your zip and I can see if any are available and get you a price.
  10. If you want SPL, the XXX will disappoint. I have a blown one in my garage right now. Leads won't hold up to much power. . .
  11. Yes - you can do this no problem. I think you are just saying set the low pass filter higher on one than the other. Some people do this same thing with DVC subwoofers.
  12. Too bad they don't give more details. Just guessing on the port width, that box might not be too bad. Email them ask them if they will give you the port width and depth (not "length" - you want to know how far back into the box that port extends, and if it has a L piece with it).
  13. I heard the only helpful people at RE have left the building. . .
  14. I did my 8 18's in an IB. If he can do an IB, it is awesome with that much cone area. Very strong bass down it 12 Hz in my HT. I am sure the subs could go lower, but the electronics are the limiting factor. I would love to have my IB and the line arrays I built my best friend: That is a 63" flat screen. . .
  15. 40 is a little high for some of today's music. As you tune higher, the output peak above the tuning becomes higher. If you get the tuning and box size correct for the resonant frequency of the vehicle, you can gain a lot of dBzzzz!
  16. Nobody reading this thread will be able to tell you if this is going to be covered under warranty. That is between you and the guys over at SSA. All you get here will be a bunch of opinions on what happen that are not going to mean anything. Work it out with the correct people. If you call them and start letting them know "well the people over on the SMD forum said this or that", it will just be a negative way to start the process correctly. I would bet those guys are going to take care of you without any problems, unless the receive the sub and the coil is black and it has obviously been abused. . .
  17. 1 4" would be enough for a SX10. Every time I read "I need X sqin per cuft", I want to throw my phone down on the floor and watch it shatter into pieces.
  18. There are multiple suggestions above - choose one. Multiple ports - example: 2 ports that give a 45 Hz tuning, seal one up and the tuning changes to 35. Build a smaller port that will insert inside the larger port (less port area with the same length = lower tuning) Building a price to decrease the width of the slot port (Same idea as an insert). These are the best options. As far as the frequencies, 32-35 is good for daily, and the SPL should be a few Hz below the cars peak. You will have to figure that one out.
  19. To clarify - 1 8 does not give you the OUTPUT you like. There are plenty of 8's that will produce good bass down low. I have a pair of 6.5" drivers in a ported box playing flat to 28 Hz in open space (no cabin gain). They only make 110 dB, but they will get low.
  20. It doesn't really apply to the original question, but with enough current, power is lost if the wire is undersized. Wire has resistance, current flows and voltage drops. Voltage drop and current flow is power lost as heat in the wire. Heat increases, resistance increases, more power is lost. 4 ga would be overkill in most cases, but I can see wiring scenarios where 8000 watts would benefit.
