JL Audio

Over the past several weeks I have noticed a number of posts regarding level setting and one device, in particular, has been mentioned an awful lot; the SMD DD-1 distortion detector by D’Amore Engineering. As most of you probably know, JL Audio has a nine-step procedure for setting levels (http://tinyurl.com/ccrw2ml) which works very well and is incredibly simple to do. Recently Marlon Skeen was kind enough to lend us his DD-1 for us to check out.

Today, Mike West and Jose Rodriguez here in our Technical Department put the DD-1 to the test to see how it compared to our method and to see how accurate the device is compared to an oscilloscope.

In short, the DD-1 is an excellent device that allows you to not only squeeze out a bit more power from most amplifiers (since many amplifiers can produce more than their strict rated power), but also can confirm when your source unit is clipping (the JL Audio method uses 75% of maximum volume as a ‘good guess’ at where the source unit will not clip). When compared to a digital oscilloscope, it was dead on. The DD-1 is definitely a nice step up from our method for those interested in taking things up a notch with level setting
