Towers I built for a friend- Bi Powered Dipole

Recommended Posts

This is for a regular customer, good friend of mine. He just had a kid, and decided to go with home audio this time. Original plans were 4- 6' mid's and 1-2 tweeter dipole design. I looked and looked for the right mid's for him, and the budget, and nothing intrigued me. I decided to go ALL custom mid range, woofer, crossovers, everything.

I ended up thinking dipole, mid up high, tweeter middle- 36-38" high, sitting ear height , bass down low, 200hz lp

I had some so called subwoofers here, 8" that were dropped off courtesy of Rednavi, and I had thought about making them in to mid range speakers. I ordered some parts, did some testing- BAM. very flexible, great sounding mid range from 100-4000hz. After testing, I found they mated very well with a Vifa tweeter set and crossover set I had used before.. The response and clarity was pretty incredible. This is when I didn't have to build a x-over, so I was happy.

I attempted to build a low power sub/mid bass, but ended up being a very efficient overall bass driver. In my testing, it is Bi powered- 240w rms to the bass, and 60w to the highs. Amp being used is a HK AVR7000 in 2 channel mode I believe was 120w per channel

Pics suck, it was 100% from my phone

The Midrange 8"

So fun doing these speakers over subwoofer. Dealing with 50grams moving mass, 2 layer 0.375 long coils is so diferent and very pleasing in the end result

side view/port area. The baffle has an angle between the tweeter and mid due to imaging/time delay. I wanted the best. This is similar to building custom kick panels/door pods specifically for SQ. The angles, height of the tweeters, angle of mid pointing down ward is all important for best imaging. The front feet twist to adjust for how close the towers are to the listening point by almost 5degrees.

I have a ritual called "terminator". I crouch in the shower in the "naked terminator" pose. With eyes closed I crouch for a minute and visualize either Arnie or the guy from the 2nd movie. I then start to hum the T2 theme. Slowly I rise to a standing position and open my eyes. It helps me get through my day. The only problem is if the shower curtain sticks to my terminator leg. It sorta ruins the fantasy.

I'am pretty disappointed with how GLAREY the pictures look, I may use my dedicated digi cam to to better detailed pictures of these in and out.

Thanks guys...

Yes that is a removable port. Originally designed sealed upper and lower, but I couldn't build a woofer that would be efficient in a 1.6cf sealed with about 60

watts

So a port was designed and threw in
