I just googled it...mouser sells them in a kit. N/M

I do love it that you guys are exploring this and experimenting...cool shit.

There needs to be a sticky for this cap stuff with safety info, charging, discharging, etc and rule of thumb for use...1 bank for 1000 watts, etc

i have made a thread about it.

http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/178148-bump4lifes-supercapacitor-overview-and-testing/

it could be a bit more thorough. i can add more.

I bumped it today :)

Been REALLY wanting to dump the batteries and grab caps, but I don't think 2 banks will support a 5k, and no spare money right now :(

Harley purchase soaked up my money, which I'm really not complaining about. Anyway, would love to see a bit more in there, just maybe some stuff you've learned over the past couple months.

Duuuuuude.....(jaw on the floor)(drool) that looks awesome! Cant wait to see the 9k nursing on those titties lol! I hope this makes your electrical up to par for what it needs..Hell if I know but I'm tuned in :D

Haha...The 9K is a thirsty beast...might need more titties. ;)

This should be a fun test though.

:good:

Haha cant have too many titties lol!

Funny how the people who have a louder system than you will usually give you a compliment about your setup because they know how much blood, sweat, time, and money you put into it. The people who criticize or try and one up you....have a p.o.s to no system at all and will tell you all about this "other" guys system! Saddley I'm sure if I meet this "other" guy...he will probably tell me he thinks your just as annoying as I think you are!

I'm not compensating, just proud of fabricating!

Sooo I was thinking about charging up my supercaps with a current limiting resistor.

It was taking quite a while...

We can do an experiment to find out just how long it would take, if I left it charging.

The Time Constant (t) for an RC charging circuit is t = R * C.

t is time in seconds

R is the series resistance in the circuit. I have a 16ohm power resistor.

C is the capacitance in farads. My cap bank combines for a total of 500 farads.

After one time constant, your capacitance will be charged to 63% of the charging voltage.

After five time constants, the capacitance will be charged to 99% of the charging voltage.

So lets look at what 5 time constants would actually be.

t = R * C = 16ohms * 500farads = 8,000 seconds.

5t = 40,000 seconds = 666 minutes = 11 hours! :trippy:

No wonder it was taking FOREVER to charge my caps.

How about the people that are just going to direct connect the cap bank to their battery (or alternator) with no series resistance...and probly get a spark to two ;)

You'll still have a small amount of resistance in the wire. Lets ballpark it at 10mOhms (0.010ohms).

t = 0.010 * 500 = 5 seconds.

5t = 25 seconds.

It still takes a whopping 25 seconds to charge... :o

How about some of you guys with 8 cap banks.

t = 0.010 * 4000 = 40 seconds.

5t = 200 seconds or 3.33 minutes. :o:o

This kind of example should help illustrate how these caps are so effective at stabilizing your voltage.

Notice how actual charging voltage is not involved in the equation.

How did you choose your capacitor value? I see you are using 500F banks. Did you do any calculations or measurements to pick capacitor value? I have seen these capacitor calculators online. You think these are applicable for sizing capacitors for power amps?

I WOULD not hook up the caps straight to th ebattery to charge them, you will melt the wire. I have melted the end of 1/0 KNU OFC when I experimented doing this to see results. dangerous. the sparks will fly.

The way I do it for anyone interested, I made a resistive circuit. Take 6 50 ohm 5 watt resistors and hook them up in parallel.then attach one end (with wire and a lug) to the caps and the other end to a battery charger. the charger I use is the ctek 7002. put the battery charger on supply mode (13.6 volts @ 7.5 amps continous), let caps charge up to 5 volts. this takes maybe an hour or 2 at most.

next remove the resistors. and you can hook the bat charger straight too the cap but this time in agm bat charge mode. this already limits current so you do not need the resistors. and this will charge the rest of the way fairly quickly.

you can use resistors the whole time to charge up but it will take a very very very long time. I have written down my results. Ill post in my cap thread with all this good info :)

You've got a great looking build, I've been a long time viewer of your build log, looks great.

These Maxwell caps are available up to 3000F, but are limited to 2.7V. Therefore you need 6 in series to handle the voltage in your car (~15V).

In series, you lose capacitance. So 6 in series will result in a bank capacitance of 500F. That would be the largest capacitance available for a 15V solution, that I know of anyway.

In the spec sheets, the caps are rated at a continuous 200A , but can burst much much more.

So the whole bank could support a continuous 200A load which isn't near enough to be able to support my DC9K which could demand 900A.

I just started playing with one bank to get them in my hands and see how many I can fit. I have no intention of using just one bank long-term.

I can easily fit two more banks for a total of three banks. That should support 600A, along with my 280A Mechman, that gives me a current supply of 880A at 14.9V (my charging voltage) which should be pretty good.

Of course more would be better to further stabilize my voltage for longer durations, but I think this is a good starting point for me.

Thanks for the comments! :drinks:

I have a .3 ohm DRL resistor I use to charge/discharge mine. Hook it up to a battery, charge it to 5ish volts, hook it up to the charger @25a to finish charging. Done in 10 mins
