Has anyone ever used a PTO to power alts?

Recommended Posts

Its funny someone brings that up on here, i thought about this months ago when i got in my dads tow truck and he put on the PTO. Id love to see if this could be done but it would probably cost more for a PTO unit than an adjustable throttle knob that is out on the market where you manually crank it to open your throttle body to rev the engine up.

As with anything else: As long as it is done properly it is possible.

Since PTOs are usually found on diesels and other such high-torque vehicles I think it would be easiest to use the idle output along with a step-up pulley system.

I think the PTO idea would be more so for having the ability to add more alts that would otherwise not fit under the hood rather than having more tourqe. I think it would be a pretty cool idea :good:

I've been thinking about a monster set up for a while and I know that the more alts you're running, the more problems you have with slippage and such.

If someone wanted to make a 50,000+ watt bass truck and wanted to be able to supply most of the power via alternators, it would take over 4,000 amps if

I'm calculating correctly. IMO that would be doable for a PTO, but impossible if it was in an engine compartment.

Not exactly... you're forgetting battery banks and the fact music is dynamic. You wouldn't need 4k of alt power at all.

If I answered you in a well mannered, informative way, you asked a good question or had a good attitude. If I was an asshole, you asked a stupid question or you had a fucktard attitude... or I was in a bad mood.

Once you get past the expense of the pumps required and the fitment issue under the hood, you could power everything you could dream of. I looked into the under hood part and quickly decided I didn't have pockets deep enough for such a project.

not many cars can get me to pluggin my ears but this one.......damn. I mean the first minute is ok but that thing just really starts digging deeper and deeper in your earhole till you cant stand it no more. Seems like it does it with relative ease....16 12's on 8 amps.........gotta love it. :)
