LT.Smoke
Not to be a dick but it just doesnt seem like the same two people made the 2 different CF creations as ray stated... One appears to be clean and professional and the other is sloppy as hell... Not being a dick just constructive criticisms... FYI Ray is a beast of an installer so maybe you ought to think about taking the criticism/advice he offers as criticism and stop letting it be so personal... Just my .02 I think captain has a reason to take rays advice with a grain of salt since it seems to be that captain specializes exclusively in cf products and ray is an audio installer. Not saying that ray doesn't know anything about cf but there's just no way that he can have as much experience with carbon fiber when it is rarely used in car audio. I dunno i just cant see how you can make one thing out of CF and have it turn out so clean and then do somehting else and it not turn out clean... As far as experience we will only know the answer to Ray's experience when he chimes back in Team MaxRetribution Si Vis Pacem Parabellum Id rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 Bowhunting- Life Begins and Ends at Full Draw Bowhunting Team Fatal Trajectory Hunt Team http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/49335-sick96vtecaccords-t-line-build/?hl=sick96vtecaccord << Accord Build http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/68498-smokedout08impalas-tline-build/?hl=+sick96vtecaccord << Impala T-line build Rebassed.com for all your music needs 👌
n8ball2013
I can. Can you make a box out of mdf and have it look good? now can you do it out of fiberglass and have it be the same thing? not everything is going to have the same techniques. john253a
im the same for cf, but i no when i had my pond outside glassed, the bloke who did it cut up 4ft mat into 1ft squared and overlapped each section, instead of using 1 solid piece as he said it was stronger that way, he also use several layers, but as i have no experience with cf, i cant help, but i did do a lot of press servicing in my last job and saw a few parts get made, and some where pressed under heat and some vacuumed down into molds, they used the heat/press method in the p8 trunk floor (witch is a grade of glass and not plastic) and the tailgate on the g8 pickup

Captain Stupid
im the same for cf, but i no when i had my pond outside glassed, the bloke who did it cut up 4ft mat into 1ft squared and overlapped each section, instead of using 1 solid piece as he said it was stronger that way, he also use several layers, but as i have no experience with cf, i cant help, but i did do a lot of press servicing in my last job and saw a few parts get made, and some where pressed under heat and some vacuumed down into molds, they used the heat/press method in the p8 trunk floor (witch is a grade of glass and not plastic) and the tailgate on the g8 pickup That's 100% spot on. Several overlapping layers are always better than fewer layers from a strength perspective. As far as the two types of projects not looking similar goes....one is a finished product that I have made dozens of times over. I have THAT process down pretty well. The first few motor plates I did ended up being thrown away or cut up to make other little items. I'll post a picture below of one of my first plates that ended up getting thrown away. The carbon was wavy and the resin inconsistent. I am 100% self-taught through trial and error. This box was the first time for me to make something without a mold, with overlapping fabric ends, and that was only wet-set and I made a few mistakes. Like I stated before, if I did a second one it would be 150% better. This was just an experiment for me and being the inside of a closed box where no on would see, I didn't place a ton of emphasis on making it perfect. I had no idea people would get their panties in a bunch over stray fibers inside the box that cannot be seen through the port. As far as the price someone asked on the motor plates, they are $500 each, mid plates are $400. They weigh in at a scant 2.2 pounds for a typical full frame car motor plate, which is roughly 60% lighter than an equally shaped aluminum 1/4" motor plate. 2006 Cadillac Escalade 2/3 drop on 28" wheels Two RE SX 18" subs RF T2500-1bdCP amp, 3531watts on birthsheet Custom carbon fiber sub box EVERYTHING else is stock, for now 149.4 @ 37hz, Termlab, dash, open window on two AQ3 18s all stock electrical, wired to .25 ohm on a RF T2500 148.8 @ 36hz, Termlab, dash, open window on one AQ3 18 all stock electrical, wired to .5 ohm on a RF T2500 147.8 @ 38hz, Termlab, legal, sealed on two RE SX 18s 146.4 @ 36hz, Termlab, legal, sealed on one RE SX 18 Link to my hack-built, stupid, carbon fiber wasting project.... http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/149946-carbon-fiber-box-update-1494db-37hz-on-tl/ http://gifsoup.com/NDM3MTc1MQ
Captain Stupid
I applied the flood coat on the top side of the box today but I'm not happy with it. Quite a bit of fine dust found it's way into the resin as it was curing thanks to all the sanding I was doing earlier in the day. I really need a paint booth for this sort of finish work. So I'm probably going to sand it off tomorrow morning and apply another coat. I was planning to put it in the truck tomorrow, but since I bent a wheel tonight on a pothole, the truck is out of commission until I can get the wheel fixed later this week. The haziness in the finish is just because the resin is wet in the pic and hadn't yet fully activated the dry resin underneath it. That goes away as the two coats bond together to make one solid coating. The dust and tiny bubbles however, do NOT go away. 2006 Cadillac Escalade 2/3 drop on 28" wheels Two RE SX 18" subs RF T2500-1bdCP amp, 3531watts on birthsheet Custom carbon fiber sub box EVERYTHING else is stock, for now 149.4 @ 37hz, Termlab, dash, open window on two AQ3 18s all stock electrical, wired to .25 ohm on a RF T2500 148.8 @ 36hz, Termlab, dash, open window on one AQ3 18 all stock electrical, wired to .5 ohm on a RF T2500 147.8 @ 38hz, Termlab, legal, sealed on two RE SX 18s 146.4 @ 36hz, Termlab, legal, sealed on one RE SX 18 Link to my hack-built, stupid, carbon fiber wasting project.... http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/149946-carbon-fiber-box-update-1494db-37hz-on-tl/ http://gifsoup.com/NDM3MTc1MQ
Captain Stupid
And before you guys say it.....yes, the sides of the box look like crap. They are up against the side panels and below the rear windows in the truck, so I wasn't too concerned with how clean they came out. I may sand them down and apply a covering layer or two of CF and a flood coat if I'm feeling frisky later, but for right now, I just wanna get the damn thing in my truck. 2006 Cadillac Escalade 2/3 drop on 28" wheels Two RE SX 18" subs RF T2500-1bdCP amp, 3531watts on birthsheet Custom carbon fiber sub box EVERYTHING else is stock, for now 149.4 @ 37hz, Termlab, dash, open window on two AQ3 18s all stock electrical, wired to .25 ohm on a RF T2500 148.8 @ 36hz, Termlab, dash, open window on one AQ3 18 all stock electrical, wired to .5 ohm on a RF T2500 147.8 @ 38hz, Termlab, legal, sealed on two RE SX 18s 146.4 @ 36hz, Termlab, legal, sealed on one RE SX 18 Link to my hack-built, stupid, carbon fiber wasting project.... http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/149946-carbon-fiber-box-update-1494db-37hz-on-tl/ http://gifsoup.com/NDM3MTc1MQ
