whats your opinion? capacitor/battery talk

Recommended Posts

You don´t tell how big your system and electrical backup is.

If your electrical system is a solid rock in your car keep it, if not like the other post´s before.

In a strong electrical system a cap can help, otherwise it´s more that it will strain.

i was planning on just getting rid of the cap but the guy at the local car audio store, (audiospecialists in southbend IN) said keep the cap in it will produce cleaner power..

The "clean power" term refers to the SIGNAL being sent from amp to speakers. Your power from batteries/alt to the amp is JUST power.

A cap can clean up things on the power side. You have to have enough electrical to start with though.

Can you elaborate please?

it can help smooth out fluctuations in the voltage and current, but it's only helpful if you have enough power to start with.

note-my stepfather who was a skilled trades electrician for saturn explained this to me. I assume he was correct. but he is kinda crazy so who knows.

From what I've read here on this forum, capacitors just aren't worth spending money on when you can buy batteries. There was a comparison of farads to battery reserve capacity and I'd love to find that topic but I can't.....

From my understanding skippy is correct. If you have a strong electrical already. Adding the appropriate cap will definitely smooth it out.

Caps get a bad wrap cuz they are cheaply made. And they are generally used under the wrong conditions.

Sorry if I missed it but how much power are you running and what size alternator?

i was thinking of adding a capacitor to my 2 battery setup and using it as a volt meter

would this be a good idea?

it doesnt sound like leaving your capacitor in is going to hurt anything. You already have it why pitch it and theres a chance it could smooth things out. I understand that adding a capacitor as adding more power is a terrible idea.

Hey guys,

was just going to coment on the "Just power" comment.

There can be alot of noise along a power or ground line. noise from the alt, head lights, heater fan etc. Even noise created by the deck can filter through the power cables. Using a cap for your surround speakers is a good idea. A cap will decrease or eliminate line noise. I would not use anything smaller then single 1 farad caps, and use 1 farad for every 500 watts. Yes I know that 1 farad is rated for 1000, but in my personal testing in comp vehicles with high wattage amps i have found that SINGLE 1 farad caps perform much cleaner and with better results if you follow the 500 watt range. Also getting one of the 5 farad or even 50 farad hybrid caps is NOT better then single 1 farad units. If you want to test your system borrow an oscilloscope and see exactly what kind of noise you have along the power and ground lines. Also if you have alot of amps or ground cables try putting the ends in a circle instead of all on the same ground point. Doing this has shown to eliminate ground loop noise.

You'll never get a straight answer on this question to be honest because half the people say they're good and half say they're bad... I have used one for 5+ years and it hasnt hurt anything in any of my vehicles

I can see valid points on both sides too... I say its up to you now... it could clean up voltage spikes but at the same time put extra strain on your alternator. I say don't do it the benefit doesn't outweigh the risks... but if you do jbass is right, get a good 1 farad cap from a reputable company like RF. Stay away from Audiopipe and Boss.
