You said you can still use the car so you left the stock wires in place?

If so then you electrical is grounded to the chassis already.

Use a voltmeter and measure the voltage of this wire you're trying to ground with respect to the battery negative terminal (black wire on the battery neg terminal, red wire on the wire you're trying to use).

If its shows ~0v then its correct. If its ~12V then you're grounding out a positive wire which is bad.

I get a small spark. It's enough to make the terminal "stick" to the battery for a second. But not enough to cause noticeable heat. If your wires are getting hot and melting you have a short somewhere. You need to go and trace every one of your wires to make sure they are attached where they should be and that no insulation has rubbed through anywhere

Lol I got a zap from -48 volts at work. The bank was floating around -56 to -57 didn't feel very good.

Lol I am an electrician in the coast guard. I had a high voltage 400hz (yes I said hertz not volts lol) power supply (working on a helicopter start rectifier) arc right in my face... the dumb bitch I was working with said she has secured power, so when I hit all the terminals with a shorting probe before I stuck my hands in there (lots of caps in there) it instantly blew the tip off the probe, and melted the teeth off the clamp on the other end. Brightest light I have ever seen... turns out she had not secured the power, so instead of just discharging the caps (would have been a small spark if anything), I grounded out the 400hz side of the power supply lol. Almost punched a girl that day.

Lol I've done that with 16 volt batts resting at 17.4 volts let just say that wrench is half the size it use to be lol

Wire melting is a short plain and simple

Have you ever had your woofers blown?

A buddy of mine had the same problem, turned out the wire lug on the alternator was shorting the stud to the alt casing.

I would be worried if you didn't get a little spark

I get a spark with my sundown amp and I did with my audiopoop amp lol

It's normal to get a spark, but if you're melting wire and plastic in the process I would think that you either need to upgrade your wire, or somehow you are directly grounding your power wire
