Wicks
Dual probe oscope is how you find actual output without the amm-1. And you can NEVER have the current and voltage in phase in a AC system. That would be 100% efficiency or a power factor of 1, doesnt exist. Oscope is only way to see at what point in time each current wave and voltage wave is doing at the same time, then you can calculate phase angle, take cosine of that angle and get power factor, bam there is your efficiency. WHOA.... I think you're mixing up efficiency and power factor. Sure you can have the current and voltage in phase in an AC circuit. Take a non-inductive resistor and plug it into an AC outlet, everything is in phase. In fact that's exactly how the AD-1 works. It applies your amplifier output (AC) to a very large resistive bank which keeps everything in phase and is able to measure output power in a worst case scenario (constant load across all frequency's). Power Factor is the ratio of real power in a system to the apparent power. Resistors (ideal) have a PF of 1 as all power is real. Capacitors (ideal) have a PF of 0 since the phase angle is 90deg and there is no real power dissipated. Efficiency is a ratio of the output power in a system to its input power. Since there are no perfect conductors, you can never have 100% efficiency. WHOA!!!! WHOA!!! WHOA!!! I think you just made my brain hurt. CJ18
There is very little science behind what I am about to say, but so far it has proven to be pretty close. All of the Class D Amplifiers I have tested on the AD-1 so far have be 65%-75% efficient at 1ohm and 2 ohm. Based on some old "clamped" power testing I did, taking roughly 70% of those numbers and comparing them to actual dyno testing, they have been pretty close. If your not aware, those class D efficiency ratings of 80 or 85% are only when the amps at 4ohms, they drastically drop at 1ohm and below.
Swordlordboy1234
I believe he was accounting for the drop in efficiency from 4 to 1-2ohms as stated above. 65-75% sounds about right for a class D at 1ohm. Dd9515 king
Kylar your very right. I think i didnt ask my question right. An ad-1 will tell you what your amp puts out at 1 ohm. If you wire to 1 ohm but rise to say 3 ohms. If multiplying amp and volts does not get you watts then how can it get the right impedance?
AMI CUSTOMS
Holy shit, I guess i need to specfiy since we have experts around these parts I was referring to in a car, amp hooked up to a sub, you willl NEVER EVER FUCKING NEVER have 100% efficiency or a power factor of 1.
