SnowDrifter
Been thinking about this for the last couple months now.... Suppose you build a subwoofer as usual. But instead of a motor made of magnetic material, you replace it with a coil of wire to act as an electromagnet and surround it with a heatsink Power coming form the amp gets split - part of it goes to the voice coil, part goes through a rectifier to power the electromagnet. The more power you feed it, the stronger the magnet gets. And because it doesn't have the required mass a chunk of ferrite would, it could possibly be very light too? Maybe? walwalka
While I'm not educated in this, I would think that you would need twice the power you need now to get the same result. May very likely be wrong though. 2010 Honda Civic LX / Deck: Kenwood DDX371 / Front Highs: Crescendo RTS-1 / Front Mids: Silver Flute 6.5's / 4 channel: DC Audio 90.4 / Sub: Fi 15in SP4v2 / Sub amp: Taramps HD 5000 / Power wire: Knukonceptz OFC 1/0 / Deadener: Audio Technix 60 mil / Batteries: XS Power D5100R / Rear bank: TBD / Alternator: Singer 240a hairpin
TRON
I'd imagine you'd need lots of power considering the efficiency of converting the AC from the amplifier into DC for the electro magnet. But the idea is cool because as much as a big ass motor is cool on subwoofers, the weight is not so cool. It can be problematic. Tarball
Interesting that you post this. I was recently thinking about this same exact thing. Electromagnets would give (potentially) crazy BL potential. I had to think thought, one of the speaker building experts MUST have thought of and tried this before too. Krakin
http://www.grande-utopia-em.com/en/technologies/em.php Krakin's Home Dipole Project http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/186153-krakins-dipole-project-new-reciever-in-rockford-science/#entry2772370 Krakin, are you some sort of mad scientist? I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . . What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself but what has drawn your attention in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears, thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener. S15_Silvia
Keeping an electromagnet of that strength cooled probably wouldn't be that much fun. I think it would probably be a huge drain on the car's electrical as well. 2016 Subaru BRZ | Sony XAV-AX100 | Rockford Fosgate DSM 4080 & DSM 40ix | On 6/6/2012 at 6:32 PM, 'LZTYBRN' said: 3.
