When you set your gains with the dd1 you are only setting a reference. Different songs can be recorded at different levels. Different sources can play at different levels too. It is still up to the operator of the volume control to keep the system safe. If the system hurts when you do that, then don't do that.

Kinda my thinking. Clipping is thermal. Not mechanical.

Clipping is electrical, thermal issues are one of its effects

OP, that's not how you set gains unless your sub reaches excursion limits well before you run out of power, which shouldn't happen cause it means you bought way too big of an amplifier.

You set gains based on what the maximum output of your amp is. You want to be able to drive the amp to maximum output, and if you know what you're doing, a bit past that in case you need to make up for a song with less bass than your reference level, as ShadeTreeMechanic alluded to, and if you play a song with more bass than your reference level you need to turn it down a bit.
