tyty =] Its not the first time I've seen it, Its rare but works like this, spun lace come pre-impregnated with a water activated epoxy, the spun lace is cut to fit the former, the backing is wiped with a damp sponge to activate it, its then wrapped around the former and set to cure, If the spun lace did not have a good amount of epoxy on it from the factory, or someone here at DC dident get it wet enough it will not be as strong as it should be and that is the end result, it lets go.

You see right under the cone, that strip of white, thats the spunlace, it should go all the way down the former to the top of the windings, but under the spunlace you can see the raw former, thats how you can tell it let go.

not sayin theres anything wrong with the DC i am simply stating, and you guys all know its true, that most wouldnt let me live that one down, at least in this thread. Instead, it got all quiet. Not saying by any means anyone should dog my boy out or the sub, i am saying that I WOULD HAVE been dogged out hard....because its cool to be Anti SMD....even on my own site LOL

anyway, regardless of the entire outcome, Vance Dickenson just finished reviewing the SMD for Car Audio and Electronics... and the results will surprise some. I think HIS opinion matters more then most

Not much to say really, it fell apart user error or not (maybe due to no break in time, maybe a bad joint, maybe solar flares, who knows). Similarly Trippi blowing a SMD had the blame being put on the install and or circumstances rather than the sub itself.

If one of my SMDs blow it's AA's fault however...

Which reminds me, I need to find out how much a recone is (don't need one yet, but will eventually I'm sure).

I blame the amp. regardless which sub I like NEITHER should have trouble with the power. Still very interesting build. Im glad Cody is able to do what alot of us wish we could do. Test lots of different things.

you wont need a recone for an SMD unless you hook it directly up to your car battery and let it roast. If you stick with manufacturer's recommendations for power and you keep it clean (unclipped or not clipped hard at least), it should last a long LONG time.

Mine are in perfect condition after almost a year at double the RMS. My BTL's are in perfect condtion after 2 yrs at double the RMS.....

oh there is no recone kits available for the SMD - its slightly more complicated then normal....you gotta send it in so i wouldnt TRY to blow it on purpose if i was you

Actually he does need a recone for the SMD. But I dont think its any fault of his own. I think is possably and amp issue. Both subs that blew, SMD and DC was on the same side of the amp, coinsidence... MAYBE but I think not. Both subs are beefy and shouldnt blow that easy. We can both agree on that I think.
