Lbox88 Posted January 22, 2013 Report Posted January 22, 2013 Just got this from senator Rick Jones Dear Alek: Thank you for contacting my office concerning the importance of protecting Second Amendment rights in regards to upcoming legislation. The recent horrific tragedy that occurred in Connecticut has sparked much debate over regulating gun control throughout the country. As sad as it is, no law or gun-free zone sign could have prevented the Connecticut tragedy. I wish I could say laws could be passed which would have prevented this tragedy, and similar tragedies that have happened in the past. Evil prevailed that day, and it prevailed in the form of premeditated murder in the coldest form. Words cannot describe the sorrow I have for anyone who has been affected by this unspeakable event. I stand very firm on Second Amendment rights, which can be seen by my A+ NRA rating and legislation I have passed, especially the Castle Doctrine which gives citizens the right to protect themselves on their own property. I do not agree with the stance or actions that are being taken by President Obama or Vice President Biden, attacking our Second Amendment rights as Americans. Law-abiding firearms owners should not be targeted to relinquish their constitutional right to bear arms. I am in great support of SB 49, sponsored by Senator Casperson, which would exempt firearms licensing information from the Freedom of Information Act. We must protect the identities of responsible firearms owners from becoming targets and not allow the media to access and publish such sensitive information. We must ensure what happened to New York handgun owners will not happen to the people of Michigan. Also in defending Michigan citizens' right to bear arms, I am a cosponsor of SB 63, the Michigan Firearms Freedom Act. This legislation would prohibit federal regulation of any firearm, firearm accessory or ammunition manufactured and sold within the state of Michigan. Not only should we have the right to make and sell firearms within our borders, but through this legislation we could attract more manufactures to our state to create jobs and spur the economy. As Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I have called a meeting the morning January 23, 2013, to discuss these pressing issues. I believe it is of the upmost importance to right the wrongs of the federal government and I will do my best to address our concerns to my fellow members of the committee to also vote in favor of SB 24 and 63. Thank you again for your support defending Second Amendment rights. Sincerely, Rick Jones State Senator District 24 UBL | Build Log

Dwn4BassAlan Posted January 23, 2013 Report Posted January 23, 2013 I heard that Obama can''t issue an executive order banning assault weapons because it would require a department or branch to be in control of it, and there is no designated department of guns that can be ordered to do this. But I'm sure they'll just try it anyway................. My response of well we don't really use your vagina so should we throw that out was evidently not the right response. I had to leave the room. I missed Alan. RIP 5/29/15 - I love you son.

Lbox88 Posted January 24, 2013 Report Posted January 24, 2013 January 24, 2013 Dear Alek: Thank you for contacting me with your thoughts on firearm legislation. I realize the issue of gun rights in this country will be the subject of numerous debates in the coming weeks and I appreciate the opportunity to share my thoughts, particularly on Senate Bill 49, introduced by Sen. Tom Casperson, and Senate Bill 63, introduced by Sen. Phil Pavlov. Senate Bill 49 specifies that certain records regarding the purchase, transport, or carrying of a pistol would be confidential, would not be subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act, and could not be disclosed to any person except for purposes of the licensure law or law enforcement. This is common sense legislation that protects the privacy of law-abiding citizens and I support it. Just recently, we have seen examples of negative consequences resulting from this information being available for general distribution. Reckless parties playing political games have released this information in other states resulting in an unsafe environment for those whose information was listed. I welcome a productive and meaningful discussion about the role of guns in our society, but publishing a list of responsible gun owners solely for the purpose of attempting to shame them is not only unproductive, it is potentially very dangerous. Senate Bill 63 clarifies that any firearms or accessories produced entirely in Michigan that remain in Michigan are not subject to any federal regulations. I also supported that bill as a protection of state's rights. Once more, thank you for contacting me. Hearing from individuals like you allows me to better represent the people of my district. I encourage you to share your thoughts with me on any future legislation. Sincerely, Tonya Schuitmaker State Senator 20th District UBL | Build Log
