mbdblue Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 Figured some may have differing opinions on the topic; but my excessive amperage alt just went out on me a couple days ago (pulley started grinding the bearings down) it was great right before I moved to another place shooting out metal shavings . I was thinking about sending it back to be fixed, but thought about whether or not it is considered "quality". So what do you guys think? I have little experience with high output alts and don't know if 3 1/2 years is acceptably long or way too short a time period. I already sent an email to see how much it would be to fix, but if it's near or over 1/2 the cost of the alternator, I may reconsider. mbdblue Posted November 4, 2013 Author Report Posted November 4, 2013 Depends on the abuse level. Forgot to mention, I haven't had a system (besides highs amp) in it for a solid 2 years now...So only about a year and a half of 1500-3200 watts. rockFord_Expedition Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 Depends on the abuse level. ^---- this Depends on the hours of use and the demand placed on it. That's one of those parts that miles, and time don't mean much. That being said, I am not sure if there is any real testing that has been done to establish any type of standard. Many times, people think high output and high quality are synonymous, They are not. I personally went with DC Power in hopes to get both. I know a belt too tight can kill bearings. kingsuv Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 I would be interested to see the different manufactures chime in on this. I had a HO alt (name withheld) last exactly 13 months. 1 Month longer than covered by their warranty. When I discussed my options, I was advised to buy a 2nd one so I could switch them out while getting the other rebuilt. I now run napa because with a lifetime warranty, it doesn't matter if it is quality or not....... Going on 4 years with it Designing, building, and shipping boxes. Yahoo IM - kingsuv00If the listening level is too loud, please inform the driver, so he can promptly pull over, and let you out. not many cars can get me to pluggin my ears but this one.......damn. I mean the first minute is ok but that thing just really starts digging deeper and deeper in your earhole till you cant stand it no more. Seems like it does it with relative ease....16 12's on 8 amps.........gotta love it.

ChevyBoy95 Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 Never had an alt fail on me.... yet. Went 1.5yrs on a mechman 220, sold it and it worked just like day 1. Honestly, I would say 2yrs or more depending on abuse. Sometimes you get bad eggs, sometime you get ones that wont die, even when you try to kill them.
