Snow's favorite packing materials

Recommended Posts

It's no mystery that shipping companies aren't exactly gentle with our several hundred dollar products. And rather than build a wooden crate for everything, I've found a very effective way of shipping smaller items.

There are 2 parts to it; both of which can be found at your local home depot.

First is a roll of soft foam called "Sill Plate Gasket." It has some give to it, but unlike packing peanuts or bubble wrap, will not burst or otherwise lose it's form. I pack this around whatever object I'm shipping such that it has protection on all size and is in there "tight." No freeplay if I shake the the box.

The second is solid insulation panels. It's stiffer, about an inch thick. Can be cut to size with a saw. I like it for lining the inner faces of a box. It will add body and rigidity so it won't be crushed. Yet if it's dropped, will deform somewhat and help absorb shock. Think like a crumple zone in a car.

I wouldn't use this method for shipping large subwoofers as they are just too heavy and need a wooden box to do this. But pretty much anything else, I ship this way. Amps, speakers, crossovers, drills, alternators, batteries, headlights... Whatever it may be. And it works VERY well.

Here's an old example.

After this, a "lid" of the solid insulation panels was added on top
