I think the usage differs from region to region with some similarities between the regions. It seems to be such an integrated part of their culture and communication that I felt uncomfortable and also felt that my verbal communications were not received or understood correctly because I don't use the "head bobble". There are variations to the bobble...speed and extent of movement, duration of the bobble etc. that I feel contribute to the message. In India (Pune), it was used so often that I couldn't look in any one direction for very long without seeing the bobble. I have seen it used to express the following : Sense of Pride Submission to a request from a superior Giving a command Happiness Sadness Greeting Conveying information or instructions Receiving said information or instructions Anger Superiority Thankfulness Sorrow Attraction the list goes on...
