Batts vs. Caps. Let's test it.

Recommended Posts

I know you guys like to see huge draws and gear beat to death, but I decided to keep things sane in this one. A 2k amp and a single group 31 is pretty "real world". And if you take the alternator into account, so are these amperage draws.

The video explains a lot, but it's long. As in, 11:22 long. I apologize for the length, but there was no way to do it with any less video, really. But for those that don't want to watch an 11 minute video, I'll just list the results below.

In case you're wondering why I only charged the caps to 12.6, it was suggested that I only charge them to the batteries' resting voltage to answer the question, "are caps really louder than batts?". The results may surprise you.

The vid also explains the method, but in case you don't watch it...

Did three back to back to back burps with a little rebound time in between, just like in the Group 31 roundup, but this time I didn't have a charger on them. (2) Tantric HD 12's in my truck. 30hz. Amperage draw on the burps was ~ 120A.

Also did a 30 second music run with a charger running. Charger was set to 40A, but clamped around 20A for the batts. 30A for the caps. The larger draw for the caps is also a small scale illustration of the added stress that caps *may* put on your alternator.

Results...

As mentioned elsewhere I'd be really interested to see a test between two cap banks, a cap bank and a battery, and two batteries on that 2k. I'm interested in the music runs, but I know you'd do burps as well :)

"Clipping" is the biggest forum boner now. It's like witchcraft... it automatically explains just about everything people don't understand.

Post prices for the 2 different batts and for the cap bank.

Puts it in perspective of cost vs benefit.

NSB - $360-380 shipped (Google shopping)

Juicebox - $350 shipped or $320 + ship (whichever is cheaper)

Caps... that's a crap shoot. If you buy new, they're like $60+ each cell new depending on where you shop. Can be had for much less used. Also, the black ones that are similar capacity are cheaper. Used they're maybe $250 a dozen. So, 20 bucks each. Used isn't much of a concern either since they have a million cycle lifespan.

But just for reference and path of least resistance... if you were to Google shop
