It's awesome how you keep the consumers up to date with all the progress you are up to with testing new designs and such! Definitely sets Sundown apart from other companies. So what is the 8" in the back of the first pic that does have the vent ring?

Got my first prototypes in for the v.3 revision of the SA-8 -- it took quite a bit of consideration to figure out how to make some improvements to the design but I think we are on the right track : * Newly tooled surround with an improved shape / slightly bigger overall size... this is a new shape I have been testing with for a while that is a bit more linear than the old shape. It allows a small but noticeable amount of extra throw. * We removed the vent ring to reduce the total depth by 10mm -- since this reduces the cooling capability a bit we added gap vents (next photo). I did use appropriately sized drilled vent holes to maintain a degree of pressure in the under-spider cavity to help push air to the gap vents and keep velocity high. I tweaked and tuned the vent hole size on the SD-2 8" model already. * A second but major benefit is this will help improve QC pass rates by reduced spider to top plate distance; thus reducing the chance for coil tick (fewer yard sale units thus steadier inventory). * The magnet stack increased to 50mm from 40mm -- and we reduced the back plate from 25mm to 15mm (removed the 10mm bump) to keep overall motor depth the same. A marginal increase in BL will be seen. * New magnet boot isn't tooled yet but will be for production. * It's a tight fit in this motor due to the thick shorting ring... to get the surface area I wanted I used 16 gap vents @ 2.5mm each as wider vents wouldn't fit between the pole and shorting ring. Also each vent is flared to keep the flow quieter. ---------- There are a few other tweaks to the way the suspension goes together, standard XL leads, and a few other little tricks in the motor that you cannot see -- all in all should be a nice little upgrade to the SA-8 driver. I still need to tweak the stiffness a bit as it ended up a bit too stiff on the first two prototypes... so that is still under-way. I expect them to come out some time around the end of the 1st quarter next year (so end of March or so). Until then the v.2 will be in full stock and shipping as normal.

thanks man! The Honda got interrupted by the 72 Chevelle project. By the time i finished i lost my motivation again. Hard to stay motivated on a car you don't drive that just sits there. I'm sure ill either get back on it soon or rip it all out and sell the car. I have too many pink slips to deal with i am getting tired of having all these cars taking up space. I say you give me a price on it ( with everything in it ) and we'll come back down from maine and pick it up! i would consider that except i would feel bad about the price i would have to ask. I mean it wouldn't be retarded but it would be more than the car is worth for sure. Plus it would be a pain for you to deal with the air system. It needs an update...or at least some new coil overs all the way around which would be good too. She does only have 62,000 miles iirc though. Don't we all have systems that are worth more then our cars? I added up what i have in my $2k honda and it totaled about 11k with audio and mechanics stuff. LOL. hell ya but the thing is, with all that shit in your car, it is technically worth even less in most cases. Just like all that stuff i did to the Honda doesn't make it worth more. But i am not interested in selling it so the price i post would be the price, take it or leave it rather than haggling with someone who wants it and them pulling out the bluebook card on you What i am getting at is, even if i know it's not worth $X amount of dollars, i'm up front in asking what i ask and that's it. If someone wants it bad enough though, everything has a price

Damn Steve, that great that your son just absorb the knowledge you have and doing all the work himself. I have two boys and can't get them to watch and learn for 10 minutes. Anyway nice clean work he's doing, keep up the good work dad.

my shop is nothing special....compared to some of the guys i know. It basically aint shit. But i like it. It's cozy, has 2 offices, a lift and plenty of room for my cars. And a ping pong table. I'm happy thanks!

Got a weird double post so I'm editing this one. One of the other things I love about Sundown is just how incredible they are across their whole line. They don't phone it in or cut corners anywhere. Even entry level stuff is built to run long and hard. And they eat up power all day long. Every rating is short of capacity. Under promise and over deliver.

I always giggle when someone tries to critique Steve's work. Not saying you can't always learn something new (sure even Steve would admit that) but the average keyboard warrior on FB doesn't know enough car audio to lace up Steve's shoes.

I saw his truck in person and it was hitting a 154 - 156 in bass race, if you could hit a 158 and maintain that, you could take it at world finals (if you are goin). Not to mention you are only using 2 of 4 T4000's. Damn, i can't imagine sitting in that thing!!! Great work man, you really are inspiring, like the car audio role model i never had. It brings tears to my eyes :'(naw, but seriously great work, keep it up! ;D
