Aren't you the guy that posted a long time ago bashing MM? You're a taxi driver, yeah? How many miles did you put on it? What sort of symptoms are you having?

Exactly what i thought. I think hes the same dude, from the way he types.

Not trying to bring up anything from days past by the way... Just trying to make sure I have the right guy.

I am genuinely curious how many miles he put on it as a professional driver. Back when I worked at Sears the taxis I did drove a good 10k a month. Pretty rough on all parts of the car at that point

My DC Power 270 XP has been with me for over 4 years, and two (soon to be three) different vehicles. Still going strong.

That said, hope they take care of you.

and i know some people that theirs ^^ didn't last a week.....and they were pissed off. I have many years on my MM Alternators with no failures.

Any brand alternator can have a problem especially when it is one of the most abused products in the vehicle and is almost NEVER installed by a professional.

I know what you're saying but honestly there is no special skill needed for installing an alternator. No need for a professional. In fact many of us here specially you can do a better job at installing an alternator. I took my car to a "professional" to do my power steering and other stuff under the hood. Since he had to remove everything I had them install my singer alternator.. They failed to install it and I had to go home and do it myself.

I since replaced it with a mechman and love the quality

Platform (vehicle, make, model) can play a large part. I know 2 buddies driving a ford escape, and Kia coupe that are having problems keeping alts running in their rigs. Placement, air cooling, heat build from motor, and 48 million other things can play havoc.

Now add Johnny Bassfinger to the mix smashing on the system all day. .

lol Johnny Bassfinger !! Look out...Johnny Bassfinger and the SPLs coming to a town near you!!

My point was that 1 and a half years is not long for an alternator, any brand, even OEM. I just gave a firsthand example. Any brand can have a problem, but that isn't what should be expected. OP says "finally broke down", like 1.5 years is a good run for it.

Not being rude, but what exactly would a "professional" do differently than an average joe?

"Clipping" is the biggest forum boner now. It's like witchcraft... it automatically explains just about everything people don't understand.

When the guy couldn't keep an alternator running for a week you cam probably imagine why he's happy.

and i know what you are saying....no it isn't very difficult to SOME. Just like i can hook up an amp with my eyes closed. Positive, negative, remote, rca.....easy right? Rocket science to my wife, mother, father, the neighbors, the neighbors neighbors and so on. So it is very easy for me and you who are 1.23% of the population who actually even knows what an alternator is. Judging by the straight up TRASHY INSTALLED SYSTEMS that i see all the time and the people that are so proud of them, i can tell you right now that some people have no business installing one. Belt tension, proper belt size (sometimes it changes with the new pully), wire size for the job at hand (upgrades, big 3), the proper plug or excite-wire if it is the type that has to be "excited" in a different manner. The fact some of these people show up with 3 different battery brands, group sizes, ages and types (AGM, Flooded) all in the same car tells me they don't know what they are hooking that alternator up to and even if they install it right, they don't know how to keep it healthy. To me, the actual "bolting up" and direct replacement of an alternator is only half of the install. The rest is what comes after.

not sure if you understand what i am trying to say.

What I was getting at is that sometimes a professional can't even take care of a simple swap since they don't have the knowledge of the smaller pulley.. How many shops have professional installers that have been installing for years even decades and when you see their work you say no way in hell he will get his hands on my car. Even mechanics who work on cars every day are not professional alternator installers

A lot depends on how much it gets driven also.

I have all receipts for my 2002 480,000 mile Silverado and it's had a new alt installed around every 1 - 1.5 years.

An ac Delco alt was used each time.

If this guy is a taxi driver I could easily see any alt not having a very long life if he does lots of mileage.

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

if he is actually a taxi driver then idling for long periods with no airflow can build up the heat and cause failure in addition to the mileage!
