Beware of this Telephone Scam! "Microsoft" Says Your Computer Has a Virus.. the reason i am posting this is because they have tried to call me twice on our rarely used land-line. The wife got the first one and came to me concerned with the phone in her hand. She said "someone from Microsoft is calling about a virus on the computer"... I said "gimme that". The guy had hung up. It was a private number. i thought nothing of it really until the next day they called back. This time, i answered. She said "sir, we have reason to believe you have a virus on your computer and we need to fix it right away". I look down at my water cooled GAMING RIG with all the bells and whistles and i say "bitch, you don't know anything about my computer" she said "excuse me sir, but we need you to type in this we address to try to resolve this virus". I said "you must not have heard me, don't know shit about my pc so why are you calling"? she, in her "east indian" voice (guessing), says, "please watch your language" and hung up. Private call again so i couldn't call back. Havent got one since. I know you guys aren't dumb enough to fall for this but make sure you tell the wife and kids! find the maximum non distorted output of the deck. You can do this right at the RCA's OR you can leave the gain on the amp all the way down and test THROUGH the amp itself. Once you know that number, use the gain overlap tracks to set the amplifiers to your desired levels. If your deck goes to 47 out of 50 before it distorts (for example), there is no way that it should be screaching in your ear at 25 when you are done. Jump over to the -5db track or even the 0db track if the tweeters are that overpowered. If the woofer is going buck wild @ 25 out of 50 AFTER you set the gains "properly", then you are probably overpowering it or it is in to big of a box. Consider dropping down a track on that as well. When it is all said and done, you should be able to take that thing to at least 45/46 even 47 if you wanted to without harm. If you have a deck that goes up to 47, there is no way 25 should be the threshold where things screech and get hot. Not if set right. Also, you need to consider your eq and crossover settings too.

The thing is, now you have go turn the gains on the amps up higher to make up for that loss of voltage. More gain = more noise. I would rather feed my amps as much clean voltage as possible, and have my gains barely notched up a hair, then have them up 3/4 of the way (or more) to make up for it. also, you setting someones system at a reference of 25, out of 50, will work fine (a bit noisy possibly), but what is going to happen as soon as your boy decides a song isn't bumpin hard enough for him one night while riding with the lady's? he is gonna turn that shit up to 35. Well instead of 35 being well within the limits, now it is full blown distortion. Not good. Make sense yet?

i missed the part where he said -15 track....start by dropping that sub down to -10 for sure. If its still to wild, too soon on the volume, then use the -5 track. use 0db on the source(s) (anything in FRONT of the amps), and i usually use -5 on the mids/highs and -10 on the subs.

Steve I know that the videos for Amp Test Tuesday arent getting a ton of views, but everyone here enjoys seeing them at the very least. My suggestion is that instead of you going out and buying random amps at your local store, guys could send an amp of theirs in for you to test for Amp Test Tuesday. In return whoever sent their amp in gets a birth sheet and their amp tested for free.

Steve, I set his amp with the DD-1 with the volume at 25 on track 7, which is the -15db 40hz tone. After about 30 minutes of listening at 23, the amp was so hot I could've cooked an egg on it, but it never went into protect or anything. His ground is super solid, and zero gauge throughout the car even though it's only a 1300 watt amp. I'm pretty sure the gain up 3/4 or more was causing this, plus whatever song we were playing. The thing was SLAMMING and was crystal clear, louder than I had ever heard it, but the amp was taking a beating. go back and re-do it. don't use that -15 track. Let him get that same BASS he is looking for with the volume knob and not the gain screw.

if your gain is up 3/4 or even ALL THE WAY (because you didn't see distortion, because you weren't feeding it enough input voltage), then you are going to have floor noise (hiss) from an early stage in the volume. For example, you set the reference at 25 out of 50 when you could have used volume 47. Well now, by volume 10, you get hiss. Why? because the gains are higher then they need to be. why do you think they make line drivers and decks that brag about 5v pre-outs? so you can use LESS GAIN. If you set it at 25/50, you are feeding your amps 2.2 volts (for example) and not a solid 5. Now your gain has to make up for that. More gain, more floor noise. Bad. this is why i tell people, don't use a F'n DMM to set your gains. If you don't know the decks max clean output (or anything else in between the deck and amps), you will never get it right. You also can't do gain overlaps with a DMM which makes it even more worthless (for that).

You need to have a CLEAN source,.... that starts at the HU.... your correct Ok I gotcha...yea I knew you are supposed to START with a clean source...I was just trying to help him make sense of why he couldn't find distortion on the DD-1 at such a low volume. Glad to see I'm not TOTALLY fucked up in the head lol

but even in the instructions it says that you set amp gain after you know your HU level for distortion. and it says that in the setting the sub amp directions.

If I'm thinking about it right, then the reason it doesn't clip at full gain is cause the head unit output voltage is so low at 25/50 volume that the gain on the amp can never get to the point of matching the headunit output voltage. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but that's what my thinking is.

If you have like .2 volts coming from the head unit since you are at 25/50 voloume, you're gonna have to crank that gain to match it. The preout voltage from the head unit increases more and more the more the volume goes up. As for your amp heating issues, i would say to check your grounds. Make sure they're clean, and proper. It's fine if equipment gets warm. If it gets hot enough as to where you cant keep your hand on there for more than 5 seconds without serious pain, then there's a cause for concern.

Bolded and underlined your problem. Edit: By problem I mean the problem with you having to max out the gain.
